OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON PETITIONS ARISING FROM THE RECENTLY CONCLUDED FATSSSA ELECTIONS - IFEC

In a memo sent out on Friday, 9th of October, 2026, The Independent FATSSSA Electoral Commission acknowledged the petitions sent out by a candidate and members of FATSSSA regarding controversial issues surrounding the recently concluded FATSSSA elections .

The Commission recognized the importance of these concerns and assured members of the Association that they would be given proper considerations.

The memo stated that IFEC initiated an investigation following reports of the removal and destruction of campaign materials where the affected candidate was asked to provide evidence that could assist in identifying the culprit but no substantial evidence was provided.

The Commission also established that the bulk SMS messages received by some Fatsssaites on election day were due to MTN’s bulk SMS policy which it had confirmed with MTN service providers, and that the act was therefore not deliberate. It stated that it remains prepared to provide the information available to it for consideration alongside other relevant evidence.

IFEC further acknowledged that the additional electoral guidelines it had applied during the election were not submitted to the House for approval or made public which is a requirement by the applicable constitutional provisions. It highlighted that established internal practice does not replace the prescribed processes of approval and public notification. Thus, the Commission accepted responsibility and the need to ensure compliance.

Lastly, in the absence of the FATSSSA Judicial Council, the Commission asserted it would await the decision of the House on the appropriate ways to resolve these matters, and reiterated its willingness to cooperate fully with the House.

The FATSSSA House of Representatives (FHR) in its Third Emergency Sitting on Friday, 9th of October, 2026, acknowledged the petition of Miss Omotola Adesewa, a Social Director candidate in the recently concluded Faculty elections as well as the petitions from Nigerian Sociological and Anthropological Students' Association (NSASA) and Nigerian Association of Psychology Students (NAPS) on the alleged electoral irregularities in the Social Director election. Deliberations were slated to take place at a later time since the petitioners were absent from the Sitting.
