FHR recalls Honourable Member

Image
By Akande Favour Aanuoluwapo On January 26, 2024, two-thirds of the FATSSSA House of Representatives (FHR) voted to remove Joy Umakhihe from his seat, deviating from the disciplinary committee's recommendation for permanent suspension. This decision was made in accordance with Article 17, section (iii) of the FATSSSA Constitution, which mandates the forfeiture of a seat for bringing ridicule upon the house.   Umakhihe was found guilty by the disciplinary committee of violating Article 20, section (I), subsection (ii.b.) of the FATSSSA Constitution, which prohibits aiding and abetting the manipulation of information. Additionally, he was accused of violating Article 17, section (iii) for bringing ridicule upon the house.   These charges stemmed from Umakhihe's public opposition to the house during an interview with the social director and spreading misinformation about a loan request. Despite deliberations on the appropriate punishment, including claims of Umakhihe's lack of...

RECENT UPDATES IN FATSSSA

Image
By Omolola Gracie On January 9, 2024, the executive council of the University of Ibadan Faculty of The Social Sciences issued an open letter to FATSSSAITES urging the restoration of order to the secretariat and the official building. The letter introduced new rules, prompting mixed reactions among members of the public, with some relieved and others aggrieved over the perceived loss of their 'play-toy.' Subsequently, on January 13, the highly anticipated Ago Iwaye excursion was canceled due to security concerns. Dean of the faculty, Professor Nwokocha, withheld approval out of paternal concern for student safety. This decision elicited mixed reactions, with some relieved and others disappointed. Following the cancellation, questions arose about refunding excursion fees. The Sports Director clarified that charges were non-refundable as they weren't paid to the association's account. Student demands for justice led the House to motion for fee refunds. In recent days, erra...

THE DUFF

By Omolola Grace         It was Monday morning - another miserable day to laugh at ridiculous taunts made at her that were claimed to be harmless, though they piled heaps of damage on her. Adenike had cried herself to sleep last night after sitting in front of the mirror, praying in tears to God that she woke up with a new, prettier face, maybe with smaller eyes that tilted like almonds or a less flat nose or even plump lips. Just something different.        She walked to the mirror with her eyes closed, really hoping that when she opened them, she oozed beauty. Opening them, she saw the same face she hated, exactly the way they’d always been. She felt her heart breaking. Clutching them, she started to sob. ‘Didn’t God answer prayers?’ she mused.        Wiping her tears, she wore her uniform. She turned back at the mirror. She was still chubby but not in the attractive way that boys loved. She was taller than most boys her age,...

Redamancy

Image
By Eniola Olaniyi     From the nl. redamantia, from the Classical Latin redamō ("I requite love").   An act of loving the one who loves you. Love returned in full.      The story of the first lovers to ever exist.    Solis and Luna.    Solis and Luna were divine beings to oversee the earth, terram.    Solis burned bright like a thousand flames, brought together like a chasm leading to hades.    Luna felt like an orchid garden in autumn: cool and serene.    Together, they controlled the earth like yin and yang.    Solis and Luna were inseparable, and the tales of their love were whispered among the gods.    There were stories of how sparkles flew in the clouds when the two were together.   The air was charged with electricity as they gazed into each other's eyes.      The goddess, Invidia, couldn't take it anymore.    Her heart burn...

Should Students Wear Uniforms?

Image
Editorial: By Eniola Fase School uniforms have been a controversial topic for decades. Some people argue that uniforms promote discipline, equality, and academic performance, while others claim that they stifle creativity, individuality, and freedom of expression. What are the benefits and drawbacks of wearing uniforms in school? One of the main arguments in favor of uniforms is that they create a sense of belonging and identity among students. Uniforms can foster a positive school culture and reduce bullying, violence, and peer pressure. By wearing the same clothes, students can focus on their learning and not on their appearance or social status. Uniforms can also save time and money for parents and students, who do not have to worry about buying or choosing fashionable outfits every day. However, not everyone agrees that uniforms are beneficial. Some people argue that uniforms suppress students’ personality and creativity, and limit their choices and preferences. Uniforms ...
