THE RISING TIDE OF NOMOPHOBIA: A GROWING CONCERN FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN NIGERIA

By Faith Boluwatife Ajewole A recent study has revealed that, about 96% of University students in Nigeria experience nomophobia, a condition characterized by anxiety and panic when separated from their mobile devices. The study, published by Science Direct, surveyed 754 students and found that the prevalence of nomophobia is a growing concern for university students in Nigeria. In an interview with a Student at The University of Ibadan, who lost contact with his phone for a few weeks, described the experience as, feeling carved out of a life, he was enjoying so well. He added, "I felt alone and bored, I missed a lot of people, and I missed using my phone. As a result, I developed some coping mechanisms like sleeping, overfeeding, watching movies on my laptop."Nomophobia, a term derived from "no-mobile phone-phobia," refers to the anxiety of being without a mobile phone or being unable to use it.
