OPINION: CRIPSY PICNIC PART TWO: WHY IS THE SOCIAL DIRECTOR RUNNING????

Image
By Eniola Fase On the 29th of April 2023, FATSSSA Social Director did a very good job at giving us a picnic that would go down in history. Well, if we are to forget the fact that not even half of the promised number of people were actually present at the event (according to multiple eyewitnesses). Or maybe we ignore the fact that a FATSSSITE referred to it as more than a get-together of FATSSSITES  than a faculty picnic as promised. Trust me, that wasn’t mean to say, for a N650,000 worth of Picnic. S ome referred to it as a ‘total disaster’, instead of a "rollercoaster"... Ouch. But I mean it’s no big deal as the President of FATSSSA sadly mentioned that the picnic was ‘unsatisfactory’.   Well, that is not the highlight of this writing though. The central highlight is the fact that the social director was almost absolutely absent during the FHR sitting which held right after the disaster-picnic, when he was supposed to provide a report of the picnic to the House. At ...

A Country Afflicted with Insecurity; Its Thirst for Survival  By: Oluwadarasimi Otunla  On April 28, 2023, it was reported that there is a need for Imo state to be rescued from “political gangsters". The non-governmental organization, The international society for civil liberties and the Rule of Law, spoke about the cases, such as; killing, abductions and so on, that have become a usual activity in the communities. The society alleged that the state was using its funds to suppress and oppress the citizens, to retain power. The group goes on to speak on how the government is allowing the insecurity to happen as they are also a contributing factor to what the state, as well as other states, are facing. They add that the politics in Nigeria has been rubbished and messed up by the country's leading political actors. Things like rigging and gerrymandering, to get into power and yet not do anything after assuming their seat. As the crises prevail, it is noted that more than h...

WHY THE NPC INDEFINITELY POSTPONED THE 2023 CENSUS

Image
By Aanuoluwapo Akande On Saturday, the National Population Commission (NPC) announced its decision to indefinitely postpone the upcoming 2023 Census that was originally meant to take place on the 3 rd of May, 2023. The decision was made after a meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and the NPC Chairman, Nasir Isa Kwara. It was later announced on the same day by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Muhammed, that the date of the Census will be chosen by the next government. The reason for postponing the census, according to the NPC, is to allow adequate participation of the incoming government in the next census. This reason is a contrast to the most believed opinion that the census was postponed because of inadequate funding.  According to a Twitter post by Sheu Sani, a former lawmaker, he argued that the government postponed the census so as not to bear the burden of funding the census which costs over 1.8 billion naira. He wrote: “ The simple fact is that the federa...

Image
By Ibukunoluwa Keyamo and Glorious Olajire Last Saturday night, 29 th April, 2023, Faculty of the Social Sciences WhatsApp group chats were abuzz with a lot of drama. The topic? The faculty picnic that held earlier the same night.   Wait, wait, let’s go back to the very beginning..... What FATSSSAites Ordered It was on the afternoon of March 23, 2023, during a sitting of the FATSSSA House of Representatives, that Mr. Oyewole, FATSSSA Social Director, presented his budget for the picnic.   Tagged “A Crispy Picnic”, he explained that the picnic would be a part of a series of social events lined up for FATSSSAites this semester.   This wasn’t unusual as picnics are often hosted by faculties, as well as departments, in the university. What raised eyebrows was the amount being presented for approval. Highlighted in bold at the end of the budget was N688,500.   One of the Honourable members of the House, Mr. Samuel of the Psychology constituency, as...
