OPINION: CRIPSY PICNIC PART TWO: WHY IS THE SOCIAL DIRECTOR RUNNING????
By Eniola Fase
On the 29th of April 2023, FATSSSA Social Director did a
very good job at giving us a picnic that would go down in history. Well, if we
are to forget the fact that not even half of the promised number of people were
actually present at the event (according to multiple eyewitnesses). Or maybe we ignore the fact that a FATSSSITE
referred to it as more than a get-together of FATSSSITES than a faculty picnic as
promised. Trust me, that wasn’t mean to say, for a N650,000 worth of Picnic. Some referred to it as a ‘total
disaster’, instead of a "rollercoaster"... Ouch. But I mean it’s no big deal as the President of FATSSSA sadly mentioned that the picnic was ‘unsatisfactory’.
Well, that is not the highlight of this writing though. The central highlight is the fact that the social director was almost absolutely absent during the FHR
sitting which held right after the disaster-picnic, when he was supposed to provide a report of the picnic to the House. At
the FHR sitting held yesterday, it was confirmed that Mr. Wole, FATSSSA Social
Director failed to send in the picnic report to the President or even the
House. Well, that was after he was nowhere to be found at the sitting.
Maybe he was unaware... I mean, an attendee at the sitting
tried to assume that before the Clerk of the House clearly stated that it was an established tradition learnt by all, that a report must be given at the next sitting following a major social event in the
faculty. Following this, the President confirmed that the executive members,
including the Social Director, were informed that he was to present a report,
especially since the General Secretary communicated to the Clerk that the
report of the picnic should be added to the sitting agenda.
While the Honourable members of the house couldn't hide
their displeasure, the trust issues of the Deputy Speaker were through the roof
as she claimed that the social director was yet to prepare the report, and for
that reason, he decided not to be present at the sitting. Then, some of us
tried not to view the situation that way, the clerk of the house agreed by
saying that his absence was a deliberate action. Hold up… Did I forget to
mention that the Social Director called in sick on the day of the sitting, even
though the Speaker claimed to have seen him looking quite healthy a day before?
Now, this brings us to the question… Why is the Social Director running? Okay…
Maybe he was actually sick but does that include his committee members too? I
mean the report could have been presented by someone else in the committee, in place of him…. But that could only
happen if there was actually a report to defend.
While everyone began to show displeasure at Mr. Wole’s
negligence of duty, Honourable Hope clearly thought everyone was overthinking
as he mentioned that Mr. Wole's absence might be a result of academic pressure.
Talking as a classmate of Mr. Wole, he mentioned that the week has been all
about various tests. Well, that’s quite funny because I was beginning to think
those who were actually present at the sitting to present their own
report/budget had spent their own week doing treasure hunts instead… Just
saying though.
Back to the question of the day… Did Mr. Wole deliberately
miss his report at the sitting? If so, why? I mean, could it have something to
do with the fact that the picnic was a flop. Why has Mr. Wole kept everyone,
including the executives in the dark? Most importantly, is he afraid to take
responsibility?
Omo.
