FATSSSA Cultural Night: The Echoes of Tradition

By Elizabeth Olatoye  On the 21st of December, 2024, the Faculty of the Social Sciences held the Cultural Day event of the Faculty Week themed “The Echoes of Tradition” which took place at the car park of the Faculty in the University of Ibadan.  This Cultural party hosted by the Faculty’s Students Association (FATSSSA) was organized for all the students in the various departments within the Faculty to celebrate the beauty of culture and heritage.  The cultural event began in the evening as students in regal native attires started trooping in their numbers to the Faculty Car park where the event was set to be held. The Master of Ceremony coordinated the event and before long, the celebratory spirit in the audience was ignited.  Afterward, the DJ engaged the crowd as different music genres rented the air. The occasion, originally set to start by 10:00 for various reasons, commenced at 10:48. The turnout for the event was sparse, prompting concerns about the low participation.   by Usman Toheeb The ongoing FATSSSA Week continued on December 18, 2024, as the financial summit occurred in the Large Lecture Theatre, aiming to promote financial literacy among students. The Financial Summit featured  the theme "Enhancing financial literacy in contemporary society." Two speakers: Ms. Temitope Gbadebo (CREDIT CAPITAL MANAGER, OYO BRANCH) and Mr. Oluwatobiloba David (CEO of LORALAND), were invited to share their financial adroitness at the summit. The event commenced at 11:00. First to approach the podium was Ms Gbadebo, who presented her speech. The key highlight was the 50/30/20 financial strategy. She further opined that for an individual to achieve financial independence, it is not necessary to allocate all their earnings to food; a portion should be directed towards savings and investments.   by Alice Ogar The Faculty of Social Sciences Week united students for a memorable Movie Night on Wednesday, 18th December, as the Large Lecture Theatre resonated with laughter, cheers, and holiday spirit. The evening included the showing of “Red One,” a holiday-themed action-comedy that offered the perfect blend of excitement, comedy, and festive charm.   In “Red One”, an audacious operation to rescue Christmas progresses with numerous surprises and humour, making it a good option for an evening dedicated to helping students relax. The film kept the audience engaged with exciting action sequences and humour. Occasionally, the LLT burst into laughter or applauded, and the festive atmosphere among students was evident.   Interestingly, the excitement began even before the film started. NEWS: Faculty of the Social Sciences Completes National University Commisssion Accreditation Processs

by Emmanuel Akinwale   Faculty of the Social Sciences has on the 16th of December, completed its segment of the academic accreditation process organized by the National University Commission (hereinafter referred to as NUC).  In an interview between FATSSSA Press reporter and the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Ehigie revealed that the accreditation process commenced on 28th November with the Department of Sociology, followed by the Department of Geography on 2nd December. The accreditation process was then concluded with the Department of Psychology and Political Science, on 16th December.  The Dean added that the accreditation process aimed to evaluate the condition of lecture rooms to guarantee they are adequate for promoting a positive learning atmosphere. by LA MII Dele Farotimi, a prominent Human Rights Lawyer and Activist in Nigeria, was arrested on December 4, 2024, by officers attached to the Ekiti State Police Command. The arrest was based on allegations of defamatory statements in his book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, where he made controversial claims about Afe Babalola, a senior advocate of Nigeria, and his law firm. The statements alleged corruption within Nigeria's judicial system, which Babalola claimed were defamatory. Critics, including opposition politicians and activists, have condemned the arrest as an abuse of power, suggesting it reflects an attempt to intimidate dissenting voices and erode democratic freedoms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
