NEWS: Faculty of the Social Sciences Completes National University Commisssion Accreditation Processs

Faculty of the Social Sciences has on the 16th of December, completed its segment of the academic accreditation process organized by the National University Commission (hereinafter referred to as NUC). 

In an interview between FATSSSA Press reporter and the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Ehigie revealed that the accreditation process commenced on 28th November with the Department of Sociology, followed by the Department of Geography on 2nd December. The accreditation process was then concluded with the Department of Psychology and Political Science, on 16th December. 

The Dean added that the accreditation process aimed to evaluate the condition of lecture rooms to guarantee they are adequate for promoting a positive learning atmosphere. It also involves reviewing the curriculum to confirm it aligns with NUC’s standards, examining course content to ensure it matches that of other universities in Nigeria, and evaluating the grading criteria to ensure an objective approach to evaluating students. 

The NUC tasked with this evaluation in the Faculty consisted of a committee of three people, which included "two professionals and a member from NUC." The National Universities Commission (NUC) operates as a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Education (FME). 

The primary functions of the Commission are described as follows: 

i. Granting approval for all academic programmes run in Nigerian universities; 

ii. Granting approval for the establishment of all higher educational institutions offering degree programmes in Nigerian universities;

 iii. Ensure quality assurance of all academic programmes offered in Nigerian universities; 

iv. Channel for all external support to the Nigerian universities. 

The Commission has twelve Directorates; Directorate of Academic Planning, Directorate of Inspection and Monitoring, Directorate of Human Resources, Directorate of the Establishment of Private Universities, Directorate of Students, Directorate of Research, Innovations & Information Technology, Directorate of Finance and Accounts, Directorate of Accreditation, Directorate of Open and Distance and e-Learning, Directorate of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, Directorate of Public Affairs, Directorate of Special Projects and the Directorate of the Executive Secretary’s Office. Each of the Directorates is headed by a Director.
