RECENT UPDATES IN FATSSSA
By Omolola Gracie
On January 9, 2024, the executive council of the University of Ibadan Faculty of The Social Sciences issued an open letter to FATSSSAITES urging the restoration of order to the secretariat and the official building. The letter introduced new rules, prompting mixed reactions among members of the public, with some relieved and others aggrieved over the perceived loss of their 'play-toy.'
Subsequently, on January 13, the highly anticipated Ago Iwaye excursion was canceled due to security concerns. Dean of the faculty, Professor Nwokocha, withheld approval out of paternal concern for student safety. This decision elicited mixed reactions, with some relieved and others disappointed.
Following the cancellation, questions arose about refunding excursion fees. The Sports Director clarified that charges were non-refundable as they weren't paid to the association's account. Student demands for justice led the House to motion for fee refunds.
In recent days, erratic electricity supply on campus has been attributed to the University's cost-cutting measures. Lecturers and on-campus business owners are affected, prompting efforts to maintain school operations with limited resources. The Student Union aims to negotiate a solution.
Social Director Mr. Ashcroft Omoniyi was suspended for refusing to disclose his bank statement or provide transparent activity reports.
Additionally, Honourable Pelumi Arike criticized the President for alleged lackadaisical leadership and perceived indifference to unionism.
To avoid information overload, updates will resume in two weeks.
