FHR recalls Honourable Member
By Akande Favour Aanuoluwapo
On January 26, 2024, two-thirds of the FATSSSA House of Representatives (FHR) voted to remove Joy Umakhihe from his seat, deviating from the disciplinary committee's recommendation for permanent suspension. This decision was made in accordance with Article 17, section (iii) of the FATSSSA Constitution, which mandates the forfeiture of a seat for bringing ridicule upon the house.
Umakhihe was found guilty by the disciplinary committee of violating Article 20, section (I), subsection (ii.b.) of the FATSSSA Constitution, which prohibits aiding and abetting the manipulation of information. Additionally, he was accused of violating Article 17, section (iii) for bringing ridicule upon the house.
These charges stemmed from Umakhihe's public opposition to the house during an interview with the social director and spreading misinformation about a loan request. Despite deliberations on the appropriate punishment, including claims of Umakhihe's lack of remorse for his actions due to his refusal to remove a YouTube video related to the incident, the FHR decided to relieve him of his seat.
Umakhihe's absence during the decision-making process, due to a leave of absence where he claimed to be traveling to Lagos, led to the house proceeding with the decision to remove him from office. This decision aligns with the procedures outlined in the FATSSSA Constitution for addressing misconduct among representatives.
