FHR Chief Whip is Sanctioned for Failure to Discipline Honourable Members

By Usman Toheeb.

During the last semester, the FHR, which is constitutionally required to hold sittings fortnightly, convened only twice due to the consistently low turnout of Honourable members. Both the virtual and physical meetings scheduled within the semester were cancelled owing to the unavailability of members to form a quorum.

According to the constitution, it is the duty of the Chief Whip to sanction members who fail to participate in sittings. However, the Chief Whip neglected this responsibility last semester. The matter was raised yesterday at the sitting, and the Chief Whip, Hon. Matrix, explained that he had decided to pardon the absentee members.

Consequently, the House resolved to hold the Chief Whip accountable for failing to discharge his constitutional duty. He was given two options: either pay a fine of ₦5,000 or undertake community service. Hon. Matrix chose the fine and is mandated to make the payment on or before 11:59 p.m. on Monday, 29/09/2025.
