A Script of Social Masculinity

Society says: Be a man and nothing less.

By: Emmanuel Omolayo.

In the societal expectations of masculinity,
Society says: be a man, nothing less.
He is weak and less of a man if he doesn't act like a superman,
And if he doesn't mask up his pain with a shallow smile,
Society says: Be a man and nothing less.

In the societal expectations of masculinity,
Society says: Be a man, nothing less.
He is stigmatized as unmanly if he displays his emotional vulnerabilities,
And if he fails to assert dominance.
Society says: Be a man nothing less.

In the societal expectations of masculinity,
Society says: Be a man, nothing less.
He is less of a man if he lacks aggression,
And if he is not the primary breadwinner
Society says: Be a man nothing less.

In the societal expectations of masculinity,
Society says: Be a man, nothing less.
He is weak if he lacks sexual assertiveness,
And if he prioritises mental health.
Society says: Be a man, nothing less.

In the societal expectations of masculinity,
Society says: Be a man, nothing less.
He is ridiculed if he is not financially successful,
And if he shows empathy and nurturing traits.
Society says: Be a man and nothing less.
