UI-SRC RELEASES MEMO ON RESOLUTION OF THE FIRST ORDINARY SITTING

The 12th Assembly of the University of Ibadan Students’ Representative Council (SRC) held its first ordinary sitting on the 10th of May 2025. The highlights of the meeting included;

1. The Approval of a Congress

The Council resolved to convene a Congress to express students demands, proposals and actionable recommendations to the University's management. This Congress is purposed to serve as a forum where students concerns can be exclaimed and solutions proffered.

2. Adoption of the Finance Committee Report

The budget report of the Finance Committee which summed up to N4,600,460.00 was approved unanimously to fund the Freshers' Week Welcome Program. This program is aimed at welcoming the freshmen as well as conferring the institution’s values and traditions on them.

3. Swearing-in of co-opted member

Honourable Sulaiman Afeez Olamiposi was sworn in as a member of the 12th assembly of the Council. He affirmed his oath of office promising to dispense his constitutional duties faithfully and represent the institution positively.

By Emmanuel Akinwale Gloria Popoola, a 400-level student of the Department of Political Science, has emerged as the first runner-up in the 2024 AESP ( African Economic Scholars Program ) National Policy Challenge sponsored by the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Leadership and Citizenship and Policy Innovation Centre. The African Economic Scholars Program (AESP) is an initiative designed to build the next generation of African policymakers by exposing scholars to innovative tools and training.  The National Policy Challenge sought to identify the best policy strategies for the Nigerian Federation in two areas: Gender equity and Climate change. Applicants were expected to engage in thorough research and produce unique and original policies on either of these areas. Aluta Continua: UI students Protest over Fee hike, electricity rationing scheme

  By Emmanuel Akinwale The University of Ibadan was engulfed in a significant protest from the late hours of July 16th into the early hours of July 17th. The protest was ignited following an announcement by the University Management on July 16th, 2024, regarding the implementation of an electricity rationing scheme that would limit power supply on campus to just 10 hours a day. The protest allegedly began at the Zik-Indy axis and quickly spread to other Halls of Residence on campus, escalating like wildfire. Protesters gathered at several key locations, including the UI school gate, the UISU building, the Vice Chancellor's Hall of Residence, the Registrar’s residence, and the Dean of Students’ residence. Initially, the UI SU President, Aweda Bolaji, was reportedly hesitant to support the protest but eventually joined the demonstration at the Vice Chancellor's residence.
