UCJ UI CELEBRATES WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY

In commemoration of May 3rd which is World Press Freedom Day, the Union of Campus Journalist, University of Ibadan set out on a Campus rally on the 2nd of May, 2025 to celebrate as well as educate students on the freedom of the Press and its importance to the society as a whole. Campus journalists converged at the Students’ Union building before moving on to various Halls of Residence on Campus. 

The rally began around past 10 a.m at the Obafemi Awolowo Hall of Residence. The President of the Union, Olashile Ogunrinu, the Editor-in-Chief , Tolulope Ayeye and Aduwo Ayodele from Indy Press spoke to the students present in the Hall on the protection of journalism and advocacy of press freedom in the University of Ibadan. 

The congregation then moved on to other Halls of Residence on Campus and the rally was then concluded at the University's main gate. Other campus journalists also spoke at various halls and locations, highlighting the need for the school not to victimize campus journalists.

Press freedom day celebrates iconic journalists who have fought for the freedom of the press while creating public awareness on the need for the society to accommodate and not antagonize the press.
