DEFECTION CRISES
JOHN BUKUNMI
Defection is the act of abandoning a loyalty, duty or principle often involving leaving a political party, country or cause to join an opposing one, or deserting from allegiance. Defection is not a new lesson or syllabus to Politics in Nigeria and other countries in the world, as far as decamping is involve, the ruling party always have the spoilt of war and the minority bear the grunt.
According to Bentham, he argued that man is place under two opposing forces, which is pleasure and pain. Of course, our political leaders and stakeholders are motivated by the desire to Maximize pleasure and minimize pain. These undoubtedly, shows an hollow support and patriotism to one's political party.
It's so deleterious that it's those who understand the law that circumvent and manipulate it. It's entrenched in the constitution in Section 168(1) (g): A member of the Senate or House ouse of Assembly shall vacate their seat if they join another party before the ends of their term, unless their original party merges with another or experiences internal division.
These, has turned to the lord's prayer in the mouth of political defectors and instrument of course to escape loosing their seats after decamping from their initial political party where they were supported to win their political offices to another party, majorly ruling party.
Since decamping has turned to tradition and culture of Nigeria politics, it has greatly affected the electorate. However, this is seen from the country two political rivals, People Democratic Party (PDP) and All progressive congress (APC). With a great continuous number of defection cases being recorded yearly.
Parties members defect majorly because of Political interest and conflict within the party, when their political ambition can't be midwifed in their party and in the search for greener pasture, they move to other political party, like the likes of Smart Adeyemi who defected to APC from PDP to feed his political hunger of Kogi west Senatorial position in 2015. Some embittered party members decamp from their party to another party like the erstwhile governor of Kaduna state who decamped from All Progressive Congress (APC) to Social Democratic Party (SDP) after lashing out at the incompetency of the party.
