NEWS: Faculty of Social Sciences Bids Farewell to Late Professor Ifeanyi P. Onyeonoru

The University of Ibadan's Faculty of Social Sciences gathered on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, to honour the life and legacy of the late Professor Ifeanyi P. Onyeonoru, an esteemed academic from the Sociology Department. The dignified memorial service took place in the Faculty car park, starting at 12:05 PM, and gathered faculty, students, relatives, and friends to pay homage to a person who made a lasting impact on both academia and humanity.
The event commenced with an inaugural speech from the Dean of the Faculty, Professor B.O. Ehigie, who presented an insightful message regarding the duty of lecturers to influence lives by sharing knowledge. He ended by urging everyone there to accept the hope of resurrection and lead meaningful lives. Also, the Vice Chancellor was represented at the event in presenting tributes praising Prof. Onyeonoru’s significant contributions to academic achievement and leadership at the university.
A poignant moment of the ceremony was the performance of How Great You Are, a song dedicated to the late professor. Messages of respect came from Heads of Departments, such as Professors Adebimpe Adenugba (Sociology) and Victor Ajayi (Geography), who characterized him as a motivating force, a forward-thinking leader, and a committed mentor. Faculty members like Professor Aiyede and Dr. Tosin shared personal insights, recalling his impact on their careers and his renowned qualities of humility and wisdom.
The family tributes added a heartfelt significance to the occasion. Mr. Nnaemeka Onyeonoru, the professor’s older sibling, described him as the spiritual foundation of their family, a position he maintained with steadfast dedication. His oldest daughter, Chidinma Onyeonoru, characterized him as a caring and encouraging father who consistently put his family first, even with his rigorous academic career.
Representatives from the Career Development and Counselling Centre commemorated his impactful time as director, emphasizing his careful planning and vision.
Students similarly celebrated their cherished professor. Chidiebere, the President of the Sociology Students' Association, along with Ekene Nwakwo, the Vice President of the Faculty of Social Sciences, thanked him for his guidance and the enduring effect of his lessons. Their sincere expressions highlighted the strong bond Prof. Onyeonoru had with his students, motivating them to pursue excellence.
The event ended with final comments and prayers, leaving participants profoundly touched and contemplative. Prof. Onyeonoru’s influence as a scholar, mentor, and family member continues to serve as an inspiration for the university community.
Through his commitment to service, belief, and learning, Professor Ifeanyi P. Onyeonoru embodied the principles of a genuine academic leader. His life keeps inspiring generations both inside and outside the university boundaries.
