FATSSSA Legislative Council amends Constitution, States Press E-in-C not Compelled to Join Publications Committee
by Emmanuel Akinwale
On Friday, 22nd November, the Faculty of The Social Sciences Legislative Council (hereinafter referred to as FHR), amended Chapter 3, Article 10 Section 2h of the Faculty constitution, which specifies that the Editor-in-Chief of the Faculty Press, shall serve as the Vice Chairman of the Publications committee, headed by the Faculty PRO who by the provisions of the Constitution shall serve as the Chairman of the Committee.
Recall, that the Faculty Press, wrote a letter to the FHR early first semester requesting the amendment of this section of the constitution, specifying that it tampers upon the Independence of the Press, which in fact, is the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, recognizes in its section 22.
In light of this, the FHR established a constitutional amendment committee, comprising five members, namely:
- Hon. Triumph Adeleye( 200 lvl Sociology Constituency)
- Hon. Iyin (400 lvl Political Science Constituency)
- Hon. Abdulrasheed (Co-Opted)
- Hon Joy Ohime (300-level Psychology Constituency)
- Hon. Divine (300 lvl Geography Constituency)
The Constitutional Amendment, thus stated, is expected to take effect immediately.
However, the other request by the Faculty Press that chapter V, article II, section IV, sub-section Vi, stating that in case of any vacant Seat a bye-election, would be held wherein 20 legislators will serve as the electors be amended to give all financial member in the Faculty, the right to exercise their franchise rights rather than 20 legislators, was refuted because it will prove to be too expensive and that each of the 20 legislators is representing the interest of their respective constituencies.
