ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: AN INTERVIEW WITH MS OPEYEMI OGUNBONA

By Glory Anthony

FATSSSA press: Good afternoon. I am Glory Daniel-Anthony from FATSSSA press and I would like to interview you regarding the Scholarship you bagged a few days ago.

Miss Ogunbona: I'm honored

FATSSSA Press: Tell us about yourself

Miss Ogunbona: My name is Opeyemi Damilola Ogunbona, and I am a final-year sociology student with a strong passion for public health, policy, and medical sociology. I am also the former chief whip of the faculty legislative house and the current Vice President of the faculty literary and debating society. Asides from being a student, I’m a serial volunteer passionate about social impact and development and I’ve volunteered with several organizations some of which I have also held leadership positions in. Currently, I am also the President of the Students’ Media and Information Literacy Club, University of Ibadan chapter.

FATSSSA Press: You  bagged a scholarship from egbe omo odua, South Florida. Congratulations to you on your well-deserved victory. Would you please enlighten us more on what the scholarship is all about?

Miss Ogunbona: The scholarship is an annual scholarship basically for academically excellent students from Yoruba speaking states i.e Southwest Nigeria, who have demonstrated a strong passion for leadership and community development.

FATSSSA Press: Are there any other requirements for the scholarship, or is it strictly based on academic requirements?

Miss Ogunbona: I think my previous response has addressed this. It is basically for University of Ibadan undergraduates who hail from any of the Southwest states and also fulfill other requirements for the scholarship award.

FATSSSA Press; Who is  your role model?

Miss Ogunbona: I would say my parents are my primary role models. They are very brilliant people and they strongly inspire me to pursue excellence and leadership everywhere I find myself.

FATSSSA Press: Tell us about your greatest strengths

Miss Ogunbona: My greatest strengths should be writing and the ability to think critically.

FATSSSA Press: Tell us about the biggest challenges you’ve ever faced on your journey towards academic excellence.

Miss Ogunbona: I’ve always been a person who combines extra curriculars and academics quite well since my secondary school days, entering UI was sort of a different ball game and had me strategically planning my stay in UI while ensuring I ticked the lists of things I want to do and be known for.

The greatest challenge towards academic excellence for me in UI so far was being able to combine several commitments and still do well academically. At some point, I barely had time for myself. But I’m glad that as I progressed, I was able to take more control of my time and plan effectively such that I don’t burn out every time.

FATSSSA Press: What has been your most meaningful activity/ involvement for the past few months.

Miss Ogunbona: I consider everything I do, down to my daily activities very meaningful.

FATSSSA Press: Any other activity you look forward to trying again?

Miss Ogunbona: None at the moment. I think I’ve pretty much ticked most items off the list of things I’d like to do as an undergraduate in UI.

FATSSSA Press: If not Sociology, then what?

Miss Ogunbona: Sociology has been a great ride really. But if not sociology, maybe International Relations or Law.

FATSSSA Press: Lastly, your word of advice to other students aspiring to be like you

Miss Ogunbona: Aim high, work smart, never give up, and never compromise the place of God in your life.

FATSSSA Press: That will be all for now. Thank you for your time.

Miss Ogunbona: Thank you for having me.
