A few days ago, three outstanding students from the faculty of the Social Sciences were awarded an academic scholarship by the Egbe Omo Oduduwa in South Florida. The scholarship was awarded to 21 University of Ibadan students with outstanding academic records and excellent leadership and community development traits.

The three students are Miss Gloria T. Popoola, the General Secretary for the 2023/2024 academic session from 400l Political Science Department, miss Ogunbona Opeyemi Damilola, the President of the Sociology L&D for the 2023/2024 academic session and the current Vice President of the FATSSSA L&D from 400l Sociology Department and Miss Idowu Gloria Temilade, the NPHR Chief Whip for 2021/2022 academic session and the Vice President of Nigerian Association of Psychology students for 2022/2023 academic session from 400l Psychology Department.

In an interview with the final year student from the Department of Political Science, Miss Gloria Popoola revealed to FATSSSA PRESS her experiences through the voyage of academic excellence.

FATSSSA Press: Tell us about yourself

Gloria T. Popoola: Hello, I’m Gloria Popoola, a final year student of the department of Political Science, University of Ibadan. I’m passionate about politics, public finance and social impact through research and actions.

FATSSSA Press: A few days ago, you bagged a scholarship from egbe omo odua, South Florida. Congratulations to you on your well-deserved victory. Would you please enlighten us more on what the scholarship is all about?

Gloria T. Popoola: Thank you very much. The Egbe Omo Oduduwa, South Florida Scholarship is an annual scholarship awarded to 21 outstanding students of the university of Ibadan. Students who have displayed Academic excellence, and have remarkable leadership records as well as good conduct and morals.

FATSSSA Press : are there any other requirements for the scholarship, or is it strictly based on academic requirements?

Gloria T. Popoola: Asides academic requirements, you must have been nominated by your department and faculty after which you’d be required to submit an essay and recommendation letters.

FATSSSA Press: Who’s your role model?

Gloria T. Popoola: I don’t particularly have a single role model. Anyone doing really well in their field, inspires and encourages me to keep doing well can pass as my role model and there are a lot of them.

FATSSSA Press: Tell us about your greatest strengths

Gloria T. Popoola: Okay, my greatest strength I would say is being able to withstand challenges or oppositions and still focus on my objectives regardless.

FATSSSA Press: Tell us about the biggest challenges you’ve ever faced on your journey towards academic excellence

Gloria T. Popoola: My biggest challenge on the journey towards academic excellence so far is having to deal with different expectations from lecturers in exams and tests, because of the nature of our discipline in the social sciences, different lecturers have different perspectives and expectations, so switching styles in exams have posed certain challenges, but thankfully I’ve been able to overcome them.

FATSSSA Press: What has been your most meaningful activity/ involvement for the past few months

Gloria T. Popoola: Past few months? Hmm I’d say working on my project.

FATSSSA Press: Any other activity you look forward to trying again?

Gloria T. Popoola: Trying again? Not sure what to say about this one o.

FATSSSA Press : If not political science then what?

Gloria T. Popoola: Definitely economics or finance.

FATSSSA Press: How do you spend your free time?

Gloria T. Popoola: Just talking about random things with my friends,  watching Instagram reels or movies.

FATSSSA Press: Lastly, your word of advice to other students aspiring to be like you

Gloria T. Popoola: To students aspiring to be like me, I’d say to have a mentor or someone experienced in your field to put you through your journey. Life doesn’t come without a manual, but mentors and experienced people can be your manual.

Gloria T. Popoola, the erstwhile general Secretary of the faculty of the social sciences is famous among her peers for academic excellence. Bagging the CGPA of 4.0 during her 100-level days. A huge congratulations to her.
