OPINION: The Significance of Peaceful Protests in Addressing Oppression

By Usman Toheeb

Suppose Jihad, in short form, explains the struggle or striving in Islam leading to the effort to have a righteous life. In that case, for one to be able to perform Jihad, he/she must be a rational person, God-fearing, and have the ability to protect humanity at large, irrespective of religion or tribe.

During the time of Prophet Muhammad, several protests took place. Protest should not be condemned if it is in peaceful forms.

At first, when people are being oppressed, the best way to make the oppressor know how one feels is through protest (peaceful protest). The Hijra Migration, when the noble prophet and his followers migrated from Mecca to Medina, was also a protest because it was against the persecution and oppression they faced in Mecca.

Another instance was when false accusations were made against Aisha, the wife of Prophet Muhammad; some companions protested and demanded justice. This explains that through protest, justice can be achieved.

Presently, Kenyans have been protesting for over a month against the oppressive government. Amidst the protest, several issues have been corrected, such as the proposed tax hike, which was later scrapped by the president. Kenya is a country where at least 11% of the population are Muslim.

University of Ibadan students protested on the 17th of July due to several reasons, such as rationing of electricity, the hike in school fees, and others. Peaceful protest is not condemned by the school authority, nor Islam, or the Nigerian government. In a sane society, where people are comfortable, protests will not occur.

Therefore, peaceful protest is not a problem as long as the policy is not favorable to the masses.
