Picnic Puzzles: Financial Maneuvers and Resolutions Unveiled in FATSSSA's Budget Drama

In the 5th legislative sitting of the Faculty of The Social Sciences Students Association House of Representatives (FATSSSA FHR) held on November 16, 2023, the Social Director of FATSSSA, Mr. Ashcroft Dominion Omoniyi, presented the financial report concerning the recent picnic, specifically addressing the utilization of funds and an outstanding loan.

Upon a thorough review of the budget, the House discovered that Mr. Ashcroft was unable to fulfill the repayment of a loan amounting to two hundred thousand Naira (N200,000) from the FATSSSA account. The FHR directed Mr. Ashcroft to reimburse the mentioned sum back into the FATSSSA account before the 2nd FHR sitting in the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic session.

During the FHR sitting on October 6, 2023, Mr. Ashcroft had sought a loan of two hundred thousand Naira from the FATSSSA account, with the assurance that the funds would be replenished through the sale of tickets for the association's picnic. However, at the session on November 16, the Social Director reported that out of the 400 printed tickets, only 162 were sold, leaving 246 unsold tickets. Consequently, he was unable to generate the funds needed to repay the loan.

In the course of deliberations, motions were raised to determine the appropriate course of action. The House voted on three motions:

1. That the Social Director be suspended from his official duties until he repays the two hundred thousand Naira loan (5 votes).

2. That the Social Director repays the loan without suspension before the second sitting in the second semester (7 votes).

3. That the loan be gradually deducted from subsequent budgets presented by the Social Director (4 votes).

Simultaneously, a press inquiry prompted a physical confirmation of the ticket count, revealing a surplus of two tickets. The Social Director explained that the printer had provided these additional tickets.

Ultimately, the House, deeming it unacceptable that FATSSSA dues were indirectly utilized for the picnic without attendance from all FATSSAITES, resolved, based on the winning motion with seven votes, that Mr. Ashcroft Dominion Omoniyi repays the loan of two hundred thousand Naira before the second sitting of the FATSSSA House of Representatives in the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic session.
