FHR 2022/23 Inaugural Plenary Session: A New Hand Beholds The Gavel

In a resounding inauguration, the FATSSSA House of Representatives (FHR) commenced its 2022/23 session with a historic plenary session on September 8th, 2023. The prestigious event marked the first physical gathering of the session, hosted within the hallowed chamber of the FHR, under the leadership of the newly appointed Speaker, Rt Hon. Olajumoke Adekola.

True to their commitment to efficient governance, the FHR wasted no time and delved straight into their agenda for the inaugural sitting. Honorable Faiz, the Clerk of the House, commenced proceedings by presenting the minutes of the previous session.

The day's proceedings truly gained momentum when the Independent Financial and Economic Commission (IFEC) came into focus. Members of IFEC were inaugurated with a sense of responsibility and purpose. Under the stewardship of Speaker Adekola, Akinmade Oladunni, a distinguished 400-level student of Sociology, was inaugurated as the Chairman of IFEC.

Notably, the session witnessed a significant moment of intrigue when Speaker Adekola addressed the financial report for the 2021/22 session. She emphatically declared that this report would not receive approval until all concerned parties were present in the house. 
Her words rang out with conviction: "The financial report won't be approved until the people involved are present in the house because of this money flying around..."

The heart of the session revolved around the deliberations on proposed budgets. The following budgets and their approved fees were at the center of attention:

Office of the Social Director:
- Proposed: ₦287,100
- Approved: ₦87,000

Fresher's Welcome:
- Proposed: ₦108,200
- Approved: ₦77,805

Basic Due:
- Proposed: ₦3,000
- Approved: ₦3,000

Dinner:
- Proposed: ₦3,500
- Approved: ₦3,500

Excursion Fee:
- Proposed: ₦5,000
- Approved: ₦5,000

Administrative Budgets:
- Sports Secretary:
  - Proposed: ₦72,700
  - Approved: ₦49,770

- General Secretary:
  - Proposed: ₦30,000
  - Approved: ₦19,000

- Faculty President:
  - Proposed: ₦65,500
  - Approved: ₦63,000

- Vice President:
  - Proposed: ₦23,000
  - Approved: ₦11,500

- Deputy Speaker (First Semester Welfare):
  -Approved: ₦47,400

The budget for the Assistant General Secretary was referred to the finance committee due to time constraints.

THE FATSSSA WEEK EVENTS THROUGH THE EYES OF A NERDY FATSSSAITE

However, there had been loud hiccups with the crispy picnic, so many might have been hesitant to show up at the FATSSSA Week events. In preparation for the opening day of the events, the Large Lecture Theatre had been decorated. A large purple banner bearing the name of the faculty, with beautiful splashes of white and orange, was glued to the wall. The week started with an incredible intellectual programme - ‘Dean For  A Day’ and ‘FATSSSAites who inspire us’. I was determined to attend the programme as it was a new trend and I was curious to see how it would turn out. My mouth went agape as I saw FATSSSAites rush to the event.
