FEATURES: BEING THE CHANGE
DEAR FATSSSAITE, VALUE OR FAVOURITISM?
YANMIFE OTEGBEYE
Mark Skousen once said and I quote "We shall never change our political leaders until we change the people who elect them". Since the inception of old corrupt men in “White Agbada”, which the color of their Agbada doesn’t suit that of their heart or governance, Nigeria has been in jeopardy. It is because some of our parents have failed to understand that phrases like ‘he was my secondary school mate that is why I’m voting for him’ or ‘Baba Michael and I are fans of his party that is why I’m voting for him’ and ‘He gave your mommy a bag of rice yesterday at Bodija, I think he deserves my vote’. Is what is responsible for the ‘downward progressing’ nature of Nigeria as a whole today.
Intellectual FATSSSAITE, the political form of government in FATSSSA (Democracy)has given us the power we'll need to choose Value. We would be ingenuous intellectuals to misuse the privilege of choosing what is meant to be and what ought to be. Don’t forget that we are the End SARS Generation, we are the ‘Sorosoke’ Generation in or out of school. When they come to you lobbying for your votes, would you choose Value, Originality, Tenacity and Essence over Favouritsm, Tribalism, and Nepotism? That the candidate is from your department, would it make you choose Vague, Unrealistic, Shallow minded Infeasible plans over Content, Sensible, Workable, and Feasible plans? Our sole aim should be to have a working governance in FATSSSA, not unintelligently falling into the same mistake our parents made, and when the suffering comes, they are the first to carry the remote control and start reigning curses. The stand for positive value you cannot carry out while you are in the University, can never be carried out while you are in the real world.
Will Rogers once said and I quote "I am not a member of any organized political party. I am a Democrat". No doubts, Will Rogers was a man who belonged to an organized political party but here he claimed that if he was supposed to pick between his political party ideologies which might be sometimes right and sometimes wrong. He being a sincere, plain Democrat who chooses value amongst all, would rather be a Democrat. It is because the truth remains that you were first a humble citizen before becoming a politician therefore let Democracy prevail. Binnu Dhillon said "I'd advise the youth to not get influenced or forced by their elders. They should have their own political views and choices and the courage to pick the right leader". This leads me to say get informed today and sensitize others.
Finally, FATSSSAITEs, next week is the press night, manifesto night and election of FATSSSA. Let’s show our level of intellectualism, let’s put these incoming candidates on their toes, let’s sing to their ears that our Presidential seat is not for shallow minded candidates. Let’s speak out ‘Sorosoke’ and make them aware that our Financial Secretary and Treasurers seat isn’t to waste funds. Let’s ask for more value in all other positions because we aren’t going to settle for less. We want value and the only way to see who possesses that value is by attending the Press Night taking place 20th of October 2021. Come in your masses as we sing the songs of ‘value or nothing’. If you have ever wondered what vote stands for, it stands for Value, indomitable Originality, spiced up with Tenacity and with a filling Essence. Therefore, vote value here and beyond.
