EXCLUSIVE: FATSSSA SOCIAL DIRECTOR-ELECT, MR.AYOBAMI OYEWOLE JOHN DOUBLES AS SU SRC MEMBER FOR ZIK HALL CONSTITUENCY
AYOBAMI OYEWOLE JOHN; SIMULTANEOUS FATSSSA SOCIAL-DIRECTOR ELECT AND SU SRC MEMBER ELECT FOR ZIK HALL
By Caleb Inioluwa Faniyan
Sequel to the recently concluded FATSSSA Elections into the Executive and Legislative Offices, FATSSSA Press has confirmed that the name AYOBAMI OYEWOLE JOHN, an aspirant for the office of the Socials Director and the eventual Socials Director-Elect, refers to the same person listed as one of the elected Students Union SRC members representing Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall.
Recall that the lifting of the ban on all electoral activities by the University of Ibadan Students' Union Electoral Committee took sail as from the 13th of September 2021.
The sale of forms
for candidates of the Student Representative Council (SRC) commenced which cost Two thousand Naira each (#2000), and closed on
Tuesday, 12th of October, 2021. However, this was after Mr. Oyewole
John Ayobami successfully purchased one of the forms, contesting for the SRC representing Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall.
On the other hand the lifting of ban on electoral activities for FATSSSA legislative elections took sail as from the 25th day of September, while forms for various Executive positions were being purchased from 28th of September 2021, at the rate of N2,500.
This means that Mr. Ayobami had campaigned and emerged for an Executive post as well as a Legislative post in two (different, but) interrelated constituencies at the same time. As the President of the Faculty Association already qualifies as an immediate member of the SU SRC, and expected to be the only member of the Executive Council from a Faculty at the SU SRC, the reality here implies that the Faculty of the Social Sciences would be fielding two members of the Executive Council in the SU SRC.
Most importantly, Chapter four, article 11, Section (i) subsection (2) of the FATSSSA constitutions states that "A member of the Association holding elective post in one of the Departmental Associations or in the Halls of Residence is not eligible to contest, except he resigned his previous post."
This clause has made a number of FATSSSAites question the extent of the legitimacy of Mr.Ayobami's double powers, since an SU SRC from ZIK hall is evidently an elective post as much as the Social Directorate of FATSSSA.
Moreso, Article X Section (2) of the Students Union constitution shared a related sentiment.
Evidently, it seems the FATSSSA constitution by this provision anticipated the case of double-service of the same personality to the Hall/Department and to the Faculty, and by its spirit, as implied in its wordings, forbids it.
But when FATSSSA Press got in touch with Mr.Ayobami, and asked him whether he was aware of flouting any electoral rule, he said he was surely not flouting any rule, firstly because he had resigned his post as Social Director for Psychology Department before running, and that he had not emerged as ZIK Hall SRC member before contesting for FATSSSA Social Directorate came up. He also gave an interpretation of the FATSSSA constitutional clause as referring to elective posts in the Halls of residence, while his own second post is at the SU.
FATSSSA Press decides to publish the interview we had with him in a distinct bulletin.
Details later.
