The Faculty of The Social
Sciences Students Association House of Representatives had on Friday approved
the sum of N186,900 as running cost for the FATSSSA picnic tagged Amapiano,
which the Executives were organizing, specifically under the office of the
Director of Socials. This was after the President of the association Mr Josiah
Obong Josiah defended a proposed budget of the same amount before the Hallowed Chamber.
The sitting held inside the premises of Room 036 in the Faculty’s basement and
began around 11 O’clock in the morning. The FHR also approved the sum of
N31,000 for the Executive Council’s expenses through the remainder of the
session, as well as the sum of N47,060 as running cost for the Parliament. The
bulk of the FHR running cost was however earmarked for the welfare of the Representatives
themselves, basically the cost for their food provision during the House
proceedings. This was numerically equal to about 300naira to feed each representative
at each sitting through the semester.
For the FATSSSA picnic,
the passed budget was meant to secure the venue of the event, the necessary
decorations, pieces of meat for those present, two kegs of palm wine and excess
Chapman for those with aversion against palm wine.
A debate was initiated
mid-way about the appropriateness of extending the Parliamentarians’ sitting
welfare to the Executives as well, since oftentimes they are co-participants in
the House proceedings, but the idea could not secure popular support among the
Representatives.
Conspicuously absent from
the sitting were some prominent members of the Executives Council, such as the
Financial Secretary Miss Megafortune Balogun, the PRO of the association as
well as the Director of Socials, Mr Adeinran Adedayo. Also absent were good
number of the Representatives, including the Chief Whip Mr. Felix, representing
Geography 200Level.
