TILL WE WIN: GOVERNING COUNCIL'S RELEASE SPARKS PROTEST

By Emmanuel Akinwale

The University of Ibadan Students' Union (UISU), in the early hours of August 30th, issued a 7-point resolution in response to the Governing Council's decision that the deadline for school fees payment and course registration is set for Wednesday, September 4th, 2024. The UISU's resolution reads as follows:

  1. We reject the decision made by the Governing Council.
  2. There will be a total boycott of classes until our demands are met.
  3. The students demand a reversal of the school fees increment.
  4. The students demand that the school fees portal be shut down within 24 hours until our demands are met.
  5. The protest that began on August 29th will continue until our demands are fulfilled.
  6. Students are encouraged to make full use of social media, utilizing the hashtags #UIFEESMUSTFALL and #SAVEUITES.
  7. The Students' Union should make union resources available for mobilization, which begins today at 5:00 am.

It should be recalled that weeks ago, students of the University of Ibadan mobilized en masse to protest against the increase in school fees and the electricity rationing scheme.

Despite the University management's promise to review these concerns, the Governing Council's resolution has left many students on edge, further reinforcing the call for continued protest.
