The University of Ibadan Students’ Union held its congress on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the Sub-Foyer. The meeting started later than expected due to more students turning up at a later hour. The congress began with the Students’ Union President, Covenant Odedele, informing students of its purpose.

He opened with a “state of the union” update, reminding students that his administration has now been in office for nearly 200 days and went on to highlight some of the projects and programmes the Union had successfully engaged with, which included the Freshers’ Week, the GES transport initiative, a town hall meeting, and the bursary scheme designed to support students.

Afterwards, room was given for questions, and students wasted no time raising concerns. Matters like the NELFUND portal, transport closing hours, sports facilities, and campus security arose but not as significantly as the issues concerning the financial mismanagement allegations, suspended students, and the role of the Press.

On the bursary scheme, the President explained the conflicting figures stating that after the deadline, some executives and students contributed from their own pockets to help indigent students pay their tuition fees. Addressing the Press issue, he stressed: “It is the responsibility of the Press to ensure reports remain unbiased.”

The President asserted the topic of financial allegations to be a case of poor communication, and the Union Treasurer, Bioku Joshua, also addressed it, insisting that every disbursement he made was backed by SRC approval, quoting the Union’s constitution as proof.

The President addressed the concerns raised about the suspended student, stating that the Union could not decide on the matter when the individual involved had refused to appear before the committee. “If the person refuses to appear, it only prolongs the case,” he said, while adding that the Union has continued reaching out to the student.

The meeting was brought to a close with the President unveiling plans for the upcoming Students’ Union Week and assuring students that other projects are still in progress.
