On the 26th of July, the annual national BSP Scrabble tournament was hosted at Abayomi Awodiora Hall, 36 Cardoso Street, Ajegunle, Apapa, Lagos, gathering students from the University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Lagos State University, etc.
Five students from the University of Ibadan, who are also members of the UI Scrabble Club, in the persons of Awonusi Peter, Onuh Benjamin, Adefemi Hadiz, Ahmed Gbadamosi and Kingsley Enyi participated in the Nigerian Scrabble Federation (NSF) and Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) rated tournament.
At the end of the one-day tournament, Kingsley Enyi, a 200-level student from the Psychology Department, Faculty of The Social Sciences, and a second-time competitor in the tournament, won eight out of twelve rounds, making him the winner of Division C (Opens category).
When asked if he had any reluctance about participating in the competition, considering the fact that FATSSSA was just about to begin their examinations, Kingsley said, "Yes, I thought about that. I had exams two days later. I still registered and went regardless."
As the interview proceeded, he made mention of the fact that he had already made up his mind. We saw how well that played out for him as FATSSSA celebrated his win with an X post.
Fellow FATSSSAITE also shared their views and seemed to lean toward the supportive side of his decision. Here's what Emunah, the current deputy clerk of the Faculty of The Social Sciences, had to say: "It's a thing of pride to see a fellow Fatsssaite represent the UI scrabble team. We've seen how since last session Fatsssaites have been making waves. Although it's disheartening that he can't do this at the faculty level because there is no opportunity to, seeing him do it elsewhere and being excellent at it is a thing of pride."
Kehinde, from the department of Psychology also said, "He actually did well by representing UI and making us proud. It's one of the proofs that Uites are the best not only academically but also in extracurricular activities. The guy must be smart to combine his academics with this without any one of them suffering. He did well, sha."
Abba's Delight, the PRO of FATSSSA L&D, added that "Education is derived from the Latin word Edus which means to bring out one's potential, and it is so great to see FATSSSAITES and UITES, in general, display the great potential embedded in them. As a member of the Faculty of The Social Sciences, University of Ibadan, I say a very big congratulations to Kingsley. I personally hope to see him on the international stage soon breaking world records."
A fellow FATSSSAITE from Political Science department, Success, also commented that "this is a big win for him and FATSSSA. It's inspiring to see people who don't wait for opportunities to come to them but instead take initiative to create their own. This is a great achievement, and I would advise all FATSSSAITES to take bold steps like this that can make a real difference."
As FATSSSA press concluded the interview with Kingsley, he stated that he intends to participate in the competition again. We look forward to writing more articles about his wins and the wins of other FATSSSAITES within and outside the faculty.
