In a moment of national reflection, the Federal Government has set aside Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday to honour the life and legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier this week.

The announcement, made by Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, comes as part of coordinated national efforts to pay tribute to the former Head of State and two-term civilian president. This holiday falls within a seven-day mourning period already in effect, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive for national flags to fly at half-mast beginning July 13.

Across the northern region, Buhari’s passing has struck a particularly deep chord. The North West Governors’ Forum, representing Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Jigawa also declared Tuesday a public holiday in their states, calling it a “regional tribute” to one of their most prominent sons.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military leader from 1983 to 1985 before returning to power democratically in 2015, is set to be laid to rest in his hometown in Katsina on Tuesday. The funeral is expected to draw dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond.

According to the Interior Minister, the day off is not just a pause in official activity but an invitation for citizens to reflect on Buhari’s contributions to the country from his military command to his presidency.
