UI-SRC DISQUALIFIED MEMBER DEMANDING RE-INSTATEMENT BY COURT INTERVENTION GETS DENIED
On the 28th of March 2025, Nice Linus Adaoma, a 300 level student of the Faculty of Law dispatched the virtual copy of a letter to the 12th Assembly of the Students’ Representative Council demanding for her temporary restitution as a member and majority leader elect of the Obafemi Awolowo Hall constituency. This event followed after the University annulled her election into office. This was because of the internal memorandum highlighting the alleged case she had with the Students’ Disciplinary Committee where she fought against the fee hike introduced in the last session alongside two others. Nice Linus Adaoma in her words “ I find it hypocritical that a University that prides itself on respect of ideals of social justice and equal chance as seen in it's anthem would stoop so low to suppress dissent. Regardless, the only response to oppression and intimidation is resistance. The only way to promote fair hearing is to stand on a pedestal and voice out your opinion even in the face of repression. Thus, she filed a suit against the University, it's Vice-chancellor and Deputy Registrar where she asserted that her disqualification was unlawful and violated the principles of fair hearing. In the court order presided by Justice U.N, Agomoh, Linus on March 12, filed an exparte application seeking five reliefs. On the 19th of March, the court responded by granting her application which suspended her disqualification temporarily until the hearing regarding the issue was resolved. She wrote to the council of her temporal restitution by order of the court on March 21, 2025. Furthermore, in her release of notification to the council, she gave an ultimatum for her reinstatement to be recognized between the 28th of March and 12 p.m on Saturday 29th of March 2025. She pronounced that failure to comply would result in legal actions against individuals concerned and thereafter made a declaration where she hoped that the leadership and members of the council would uphold the appropriate ideals and do right by the student populace. The next hearing on the matter is to take place on April 2, 2025. However, the speaker of the Students’ Representative Council on the 29th of March 2025 declared in a release that Nice Linus Adaoma could not be reinstated for want of due process adding that for her to be recognized as a member of the council and majority leader, she would have to be elected and sworn in by the University's management, an oath form by the University's management signed by Hon Nice Linus must be issued, as well as a receipt of an internal memorandum from the University's management notifying the council of her swearing-in and assumption of office. The speaker asserted that all of these weren't appropriately carried out as on the day of the inauguration ceremony of the council members by the University management, she was assaulted and denied access into the ceremony thus the denial of her restitution. He further highlighted that she was not removed from the SRC's Whatsapp platform by the current administration but rather from the transition group by Rt. Hon. Matthias Opegbemi Busoye who was acting on the internal memorandum released by the management of the University and so Nice Linus should therefore address her directives to the right quarters.
