Dr Fashae Delivers The Social Sciences 28th Faculty Lecture

The 28th Faculty lecture of the Social Sciences officially commenced shortly before 4 pm with the recitation of the Nigerian Anthem as well as the U.I Anthem in the LLT of the Social Sciences Faculty.
The Dean of the Faculty of the Social Sciences took to the podium to acknowledge the presence of dignitaries, lecturers, Deans of faculties, Heads of Departments and the audience.
Dr Olutoyin A. Fashae began her speech at 4:00 pm with an appreciation address before she proceeded to introduce her research lecture titled “Let the Rivers Breathe: Health Rivers in a Messy World”
The Lecturer expatiated the Significance of the rivers and their impact on the creation of landforms. ‘’Rivers mould the landscape through erosion, rivers have been crucial for navigation and trade. For example, the Mississippi River in the United States. Rivers are also essential for Hydroelectric power’’, she enlightened.
During her presentation, Dr Fashae expatiated on how a healthy river system sustains human beings and the ecosystem. She also pointed out that these services are threatened by constant operations such as industrialization.
Land-user states like Lagos, Niger-delta, Aba and Port Harcourt are facing water pollution as a result of continuous discharge from manufacturing companies and refineries into the river bodies.
In her presentation, Dr. Fashe pointed out that while flooding is a natural process, it can be exacerbated by deforestation, urbanization, and other factors alike.
Natural floods can be beneficial by replenishing nutrients nevertheless, effective flood management is required, she added.
Dr Fashae further addressed the mitigation of river messiness in Nigeria highlighting that Pollution is the primary threat to river health and should be managed
She discussed the impacts of healthy rivers. According to her, a healthy river maintains natural processes and habitation for animals, enables fish migration, serves as aquatic and terrestrial species habitat, is necessary for ecological balance and residence, recreation purposes, sustains tourism for economic benefits, provides essential water for Irrigation and maintenance of crop production, and balances the cultural significance for maintaining a culture’s identity and sustainability.
In addition, maintaining healthy rivers is essential for the well-being of both the natural ecosystem and human communities. The issue of river pollution should be managed through a comprehensive approach, the lecturer advised.
Furthermore, she asserted that her topic is concerned with developing and enforcing policies that protect the river ecosystem. The lecturer finalized her lecture with a geomorphological creed, ‘’let the rivers breathe, save lives...”
Dr Fashae rounded off with words of acknowledgment and appreciation to her Family, supervisors, colleagues, the faculty, the Institution, and students.
The Dean took to the podium once again to recognize the presence of the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC), the former DVC, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, and the Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences among others.
The National Anthem and School Anthem were recited and the event came to a close.
