Aluta Continua: UI students Protest over Fee hike, electricity rationing scheme

The University of Ibadan was engulfed in a significant protest from the late hours of July 16th into the early hours of July 17th. The protest was ignited following an announcement by the University Management on July 16th, 2024, regarding the implementation of an electricity rationing scheme that would limit power supply on campus to just 10 hours a day.
The protest allegedly began at the Zik-Indy axis and quickly spread to other Halls of Residence on campus, escalating like wildfire. Protesters gathered at several key locations, including the UI school gate, the UISU building, the Vice Chancellor's Hall of Residence, the Registrar’s residence, and the Dean of Students’ residence.
Initially, the UI SU President, Aweda Bolaji, was reportedly hesitant to support the protest but eventually joined the demonstration at the Vice Chancellor's residence.
Described as peaceful, the protest also saw the participation of former UI executives.
The protest culminated in the early hours of July 17th with the release of a 5-point resolution. The points of resolution are as follows:
1. There will be neither lectures nor transportation within the school
premises on the 17th of July 2024.
2. The Mass action will continue on July 17 starting from 5am. The
Union officials must make available all union resources,including
THE ALUTA JET, Public Address System, and the Student Union
officials must be present to join the mobilization effort towards this.
3. The School authority in association with maintenance must
withdraw the memo on electricity rationing, dated 16th of July.
2024, and in addition, there must be a constant power supply within
the school effective immediately
4. There must be a total REVERSAL OF all fees, and NOT
REDUCTION, Those who have paid must be refunded
5.The Students' Union condemns the ongoing victimization of three
Students of the University of Ibadan; Aduwo Ayodele, Olamide
Gbadegesin and Nice Linus, who embarked on a peaceful protest on
the 13th of May 2024 and as such, call for an end to the
victimization
