REGALE DINNER BUT PALTRY SATISFACTION: ON FATSSSA DINNER

Opinion: By GAUDIUM INTUERI

The long-awaited FATSSSA dinner was held on 23rd June 2023. With the theme ‘Regale,’ one would expect that with this theme, the event would be graced by exquisiteness in all ramifications. Still, it's unfortunate that the dinner, to a considerable extent, brewed dissatisfaction on the path of various patrons (FATSSSAites) at the event. In fact, one could say that many students are clairvoyant by refusing to attend the event because the event, compared to its theme ‘Regale,’ was below par. Moreover, considering the average turnout of students, one could clearly assume that the organization, especially in terms of the arrangement at which the dish is served, is poor.

The dissatisfaction among the attendees was so significant that some students had to leave the event early. It's unfortunate that the dinner, which was eagerly anticipated, failed to deliver the expected level of excellence and grandeur. The theme "Regale" suggests a luxurious and extravagant experience, but it seems that the execution of the event did not align with this vision.

According to the report from the Financial Secretary, it was stated that approximately 80 students paid for the Faculty dinner out of a total of 700-900 FATSSSAites. This low turnout further highlights the dissatisfaction among the attendees and the lack of appeal the event held for many.

Besides the fact that some students didn’t get what they ordered, some students vented their displeasure at the serving of ponmo, which has been banned nationwide because of its health implications. This is no doubt a slap on the face of the FATSSSA  Administration for failing to consider the health of FATSSSAites by serving the banned ponmo. A student remarked, “There is a low degree of organization, and I am unsatisfied. It is not worth my money, and the food is a 1/10”

Below is an interview session conducted with a FATSSAite present at the dinner; it goes thus:

GAUDIUM (FATSSSA Press): What were your expectations for the Faculty dinner, and how did it differ from what you had anticipated?

INTERVIEWEE: I have seen videos/ pictures of people’s dinner parties, and it was exceptional from the setting to the finishing, and this was Miles off what I expected

GAUDIUM (FATSSSA Press): Can you share specific aspects of the event that you found disappointing or unsatisfactory?

INTERVIEWEE: I honestly didn’t find anything interesting asides from the award giving

GAUDIUM (FATSSSA Press): Were there any particular issues or challenges that arose during the dinner that contributed to your dissatisfaction?

INTERVIEWEE: I didn’t get there on time, so I can’t say, but the part I witnessed wasn’t all that

GAUDIUM (FATSSSA Press): How do you believe the Faculty dinner could have been improved to meet your expectations better?

INTERVIEWEE: I’d rather not say because, according to the president, “SDC.”

GAUDIUM (FATSSSA Press): Did you have any concerns about the organization, structure, or execution of the event? If so, could you elaborate on those concerns?

INTERVIEWEE: It’s okay to leave it as it is. As the president said, a lot of things went down behind closed doors

Despite these poor remarks, there was no doubt that the entertainment part of the event was, to a degree, satisfying. The venue used for the dinner was a state of the art and prestigious, but this raises the question: If about 80 students paid for dinner out of 700-900, why was the ICC chosen as the venue for dinner, which was no doubt one of the most expensive halls in UI? According to a reliable source, it was stated that the ICC costs over #200 000, which would undoubtedly encumber the welfare satisfaction of students who want to enjoy dinner to the fullest especially bordering on the available dishes. Choosing an expensive venue like the ICC without a substantial turnout raises concerns about the financial implications and priorities of the event. It is essential for the organizers to carefully consider the financial feasibility and the anticipated attendance when selecting a venue for future events. A more budget-friendly option could have been explored to ensure that the funds were allocated appropriately and that most FATSSSAites could partake in the event without financial strain.
