Dean inaugurates new FATSSSA executives, warns them against operating outside the University rules
By Kayode Oyeniran, UI
The dean of the Faculty of the Social Sciences, Prof. P.O. Olapegba, on Monday at the inauguration/swearing-in ceremony of the new members of the executive of the Faculty of the Social Sciences Students' Association (FATSSSA) held at the office of the dean, warned the new executives against operating outside the University rules.
While admonishing the new executives before the official oath taking exercise, he charged them to consider their election as a privilege to serve knowing that the power they wield has been entrusted them by the students who voted them. He also enjoined them to not take the privilege they have to serve for granted. According to him, "the office is for service... It does not make you more superior than the people you are leading, as a matter of fact, they decided to put you in office to serve. It is a privilege, power resides with them...they have just given you power to exercise on their behalf. So, don't ever attempt to Lord it over them. Don't think you are executive because you know more than they do."
He further noted that their primary assignment in the University is their academics and that they should ensure that they operate within the University rules. In his words, "Your primary assignment in the University of Ibadan is to study and graduate with a certificate. Politics is not your number one business. Politics may also come in atleast as a form of leadership development, to develop leadership capacity... So, you have to weigh your actions, and make sure you operate within the ambit of the rules in the University...As it were, you spend one year in office, you can use that one year to position yourself for greater responsibilities and then you can use that one year to destroy the future you are looking at...Do not allow your activities in politics affect your academics, the moment it starts affecting, it then means you are not a leadership material...the beauty of it is that you graduate without any extra semester."
While also felicitating with the new executives, the Faculty Officer, Mr S. L. Igonor and the Sub-Dean, Dr. Idowu Johnson pleaded with the new executives to be good ambassadors of the faculty and to desist from actions that can lead them to face the Students Disciplinary Committee (SDC). According to the F. O, "I hate arraigning students for disciplinary cases, and to the glory of God, the ones we have had in the past, I warned them." The F.O concluded by encouraging them to avoid bogus plans, focus on achieving results and to always seek the support of their lecturers.
The outgoing President, Mr Faith Omitoyin, in his own remark--encouraged the incoming executives to brace up for the challenges and distractions of the offices they occupy. The newly inaugurated President in his short remark presented the proposed Plan of Action of the new executives while also soliciting for the support of the faculty management in ensuring that maximum success is recorded with regards to their proposed plans. Amongst other students leaders present at the inauguration/swearing-in ceremony are the Speaker of the FATSSSA House of Representative(FHR), Rt. Hon. Williams Ugwuja and the President of the National Association of Political Science Students(NAPSS), Hon. Tom Ajayi.
