The University of ibadan Student' Union on Sunday, February 1, 2026, held a memorial candlelight procession in honour of a student activist, Kunle Adepeju, who lost his life during a student protest in 1971.

The event, announced earlier through an official circular dated January 31, 2026, was organised to commemorate Adepeju’s sacrifice and reflect on its historical significance in the struggle for student rights within the institution.

Kunle Adepeju, after whom the student union building is named, reportedly died during a police crackdown while students were protesting against unfavourable conditions at the time. His death has since become a symbol of resistance and courage in the history of student activism at the University of Ibadan.

In the circular, Union leaders described the procession as not only a moment of remembrance but also an opportunity for students to reconnect with the institution’s legacy of activism and collective struggle.

The memorial was aimed at preserving Adepeju’s legacy and reminding the student body of the sacrifices made in the pursuit of justice and better conditions for students.
