By Victoria Adeusi

On July 26, 2024, the Faculty of Social Sciences held its freshers' orientation alongside the Dean's Roll of Honour ceremony, a sessional award given to outstanding students across the faculty's departments. The program began a few minutes after 10 am with the first phase being the freshers' orientation. During the lecture, the Dean delivered a speech encouraging all students to strive to be the “best in all ramifications.”

The Sub-dean provided a comprehensive overview of the basic requirements for graduation as well as the registration of courses to freshmen. He emphasized the negative consequences of failing to meet these basic requirements. At 11:10 am, the Sub-dean concluded his speech by stressing the need for freshmen to strive for excellence.

Dr. Abel Obosi then sensitized the freshmen about the Students' Help Centre, highlighting its importance as an intermediary between lecturers and students, a source of financial support, and a center for student development. He encouraged students not to "keep quiet but speak out." He also announced the names of members who served in the Students' Help Centre, citing Olaoluwa Yemisi, Adedoyin Ayomide, Adejumo Mayowa, and Fagbemi Feyisola. The incumbent coordinator of the Students’ Help Centre is Obadan Mary, with Ekene Emmanuel serving as the Co-Coordinator and Vice President.

Dr. Funke Adegoke from the Department of Sociology delivered a speech emphasizing the need for students to strike a balance in their lives. She stressed the importance of physical, financial, and mental wellness among students. She encouraged students to ask questions in class and to manage their time efficiently for important activities, asking themselves the critical question about their purpose in “this great citadel of learning.”

Dr. Akinyemi highlighted the importance of participating in extracurricular activities by joining sports, religious, and press organizations while managing their time efficiently. She also emphasized the importance of knowing when to say no.

The Faculty Librarian enlightened the freshmen about the library, noting that it is open on weekdays from 8 am to 4 pm. He stressed that students are not allowed to eat in the library to prevent damage from rats.
