ARE YOU POLITICALLY VERBATIVE OR IMPAIRED?
JOHN BUKUNMI
This is a question that needs to be answered with a keynote called "Political Apathy." Political apathy is a lackadaisical attitude that people have towards the ruling and affairs of their state. Political apathy has turned into a cankerworm that is eating into the fabric of African politics day in and day out. Before we are lost in the camaraderie of this article, let's treat this disease (Political Apathy) with the best panacea and identify its symptoms.
High-handedness, totalitarian, and dictatorial governments breed apathy. Subjects tend to show lackadaisical attitudes towards the affairs of their government and political activists, embracing the Orwellian school of thought, where truths are bound in paradox and justice is revealed through euphemism. In such a climate, our words and works attack none and cover all.
Apathy's presence is not only felt in politics but is also embedded in educational environments, businesses, and religion, to mention a few. Apathy in politics arises when subjects see their leaders as the perfect embodiment of truth that can rule without being checked, either constitutionally or absolutely. This happens when youths become keyboard warriors for justice in the corner of their rooms but are later seen on the road giving bribes to cut corners.
Apathy is worshipped in its majesty in educational settings in diverse ways. Students are taught truths and principles that can't be upheld or practiced where they are being taught. We are taught how to embrace all and reject none in the name of discipline. Apathy in educational environments is more viral than its predecessor (politics), where wards believe that democracy is a principle to be learned and not practiced. Freedom of speech now becomes a nightmare that shouldn't be seen in daylight.
Criticism from the people towards their leaders is always seen as opposition or a stumbling block that hinders the Head of State from reaching their goals. This perception makes the leader treat any constructive or destructive criticism like a treason and felony case.
Before we can treat political apathy, we need to ask ourselves a critical question: Are we politically VERBative in action and not impaired in action or words?
