By Emmanuel Akinwale
On Friday, February 2nd, 2024, Sub-Saharan Africa's premier public speaking event, Jaw War, unfolded its highly anticipated Inter-Faculty battle amidst great excitement. Despite a delayed start, the event commenced with customary formalities, including the rendition of the National Anthem and anthems representing the esteemed University of Ibadan and Jaw War itself.
The panel of judges, led by Chief Judge Dr. Bola Benson, was introduced to the eager audience, followed by the announcement of the Time Keeper, Afonja Adebola. Representatives from various faculties took their positions on the podium as the main event began.
The engaging debates commenced with passionate exchanges on topics ranging from agriculture's role in wealth creation to the relevance of the NYSC Programme in Nigeria. Each fray saw articulate speakers from faculties such as Arts, Veterinary Medicine, Basic Medical Sciences, Environmental Design, Public Health, Dentistry, Social Sciences, Pharmacy, Economics, Science, Law, RNR (Renewable Natural Resources), Education, Technology, Clinical Sciences, and Agriculture presenting compelling arguments.
After a series of intense debates and exchanges, the event culminated in the announcement of results:
Faculty of Arts (75.25) secured victory against Veterinary Medicine (69.22).
Basic Medical Sciences (77.91) triumphed over Environmental Design (64.91).
Public Health (74.25) narrowly lost to Dentistry (75.25).
The Social Sciences (81.58) emerged victorious against Pharmacy (71.25).
Science (76.16) prevailed over Economics (69.33).
Law (80.78) outperformed RNR (76.59).
Technology (79.91) surpassed Education (73.83).
Agriculture (78.83) narrowly defeated Clinical Sciences (78.41).
The prestigious award for the best speaker was conferred upon Ogunsesan Nafisat from the Faculty of Law, although some attendees expressed dissent over the selection, citing alternative deserving candidates.
Despite the intellectual fervour and spirited exchanges, criticisms emerged regarding the event's organisation, including concerns about the sound system's quality and perceived discrepancies in judging decisions.
With the Faculty of the Social Sciences advancing to the next stage, anticipation mounted as they prepared to face off against the Faculty of Dentistry in the upcoming rounds of the Jaw War.
