JAW WAR 2017: GIVE US A BIGGER VENUE, PLEASE!
"Can we just use
the field or stadium next year?" These were the words of a clearly
disgruntled spectator in the crowded Large Lecture Theatre of the faculty of
the social sciences who was there just like everyone else - to witness the "jaw war" competition. The
LLT was filled to its brim and even overflowed outside. Those that got seats
though more fortunate than the army standing were crammed on these seats; we
had no choice than to inhale oozing odors from different and variant sources.
Anybody with a hand fan or its improvised equivalent were Lords of the moment
as we all swarmed around them like ants attracted to sugar. The heat was almost
unbearable and it still remains a mystery to me how nobody fainted under these
circumstances. Before you conclude that I went there late, I did not.
I was
there on both days (note I attended the first two days of the first round) an
hour before the program commenced where classes held on those occasions and we
had no choice than stand outside until the classes were over. I thought a seat
was sure for me, only to realize that the students who attended the class had
taken a sizeable proportion of the seats for themselves and their friends.
Imagine seeing empty seats with bags on them only to ask if it’s taken and get
the familiar reply; “someone is here".
Finally I got a place to manage with someone I now consider a friend because
"a friend in need is a friend indeed".
It was a good program
don't get me wrong and don't call me “bad belle", I enjoyed the debate;
the speeches, the speakers, their comebacks and the so amazing punch lines that
defied the hand-tapping gesture.
I also loved the fact
that jaw war so far has showed the unity of UItes as students across all halls
and faculties in this Prestigious university and even from UCH came together to
be a part of this event and it goes on to translate that students in this
university still have a voice.
I am sure that the
majority of those who attended jaw war 2017, the first round found it worthy of
their time but it was obvious that the conditions did not allow us enjoy the
debate as we ought to. Dr Akin Lewis in
his speech suggested that the stadium be considered a possible venue for next
year's edition and I cannot agree any less. If we cannot get sponsors to enable
us use big halls like Trenchard or ICC then the stadium should at least be
considered. From this year's edition, it has been visible to the blind and
audible to the deaf that the Social sciences LLT or any other lecture theatre
cannot accommodate the large number of observers. The beauty of this is that
the number will keep increasing year after year.
To conclude, jaw war
is a program I love as it displays on a universal scale, the talents we have in
this prestigious university and how these talents are able not only to speak
but to also communicate what they speak to a large audience.
We will keep coming,
we will bring our friends, and they will also invite their friends... Where
would they sit? So, I ask once again this time politely, "Can we get a bigger venue.... please?"
