FATSSSA HOLDS FRESHERS ORIENTATION, CELEBRATES ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AT DEAN'S ROLL OF HONOUR

The Faculty of The Social Sciences, University of Ibadan, on April 7, hosted a comprehensive orientation programme for newly admitted students alongside the Dean’s Roll of Honour ceremony at the Faculty Large Lecture Theatre (LLT). The event commenced at 11:20 a.m. with the rendition of the National and University anthems, attended by lecturers, students, and distinguished guests.
In attendance at the event, were; the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. B. O. Ehigie; the Staff Adviser, Prof. S. Lafenwa; the Faculty Librarian, Mrs. Susan Ayodele Tomomonwo; the Director of UI-CDC, Prof. D. A. Oluwole; the Sub-Dean, Dr. Adegoke; and other notable academic staff.
In his welcome address, the Faculty President, Adegoke Peter, congratulated the Freshmen on their admission into the University of Ibadan, describing the institution as prestigious and encouraging them to contribute to the vision of building the Faculty of The Social Sciences into one of the greatest in the University’s history.
Addressing academic conduct, the Sub-Dean warned against examination malpractice, outlining the severe consequences attached to such offences. She also highlighted the academic requirements for graduation and advised students on proper conduct within the Faculty and the broader University environment.
Speaking on student development, the Staff Adviser, Prof. S. Lafenwa, emphasized the importance of balancing academics, wellness, and extracurricular activities. He urged students to prioritize their studies while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In his words, “Read well, relate well, eat well, dress well, and rest well,” a remark that resonated strongly with the audience.
The session also featured a presentation on gender equality and sexual harassment by Prof. Olufunmilola Ajayi, Director of the Gender Mainstreaming Office (GMO). She sensitized students to the university’s gender and sexual harassment policies, stressing that harassment extends beyond rape to include verbal, visual, and cyber forms. She noted that the policies aim to uphold dignity, ensure equity, and create a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.
Additionally, the Faculty Librarian, Mrs. Susan Ayodele Tomomonwo, enlightened students on effective library usage, encouraging them to take full advantage of the academic resources available to support their studies.
The event also featured the Dean’s Roll of Honour, where outstanding students from departments such as Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology were recognized for academic excellence. Notably, Olaoluwa Tunmise Deborah, a 200-level Sociology student emerged as the overall best student in the Faculty and the top student in her department, Sociology.
The combined event provided freshers with essential academic guidance while also inspiring them through the recognition of excellence within the Faculty.
