Egg Donation Is Not A Permanent Source Of Income: UI Health Service Cautions Female Students On IVF

The management of the University Health Service released a memo advising on egg donation to the members of the University community on the 15th of April 2025. In this memo, the growing trend involving the participation and recruitment of female students by individuals, agents and agencies was expressed.

The Director of UHS alarmed that while egg donation has brought hope to many families struggling with infertility, it is important to note that it shouldn't be considered as a permanent source of income or as an alternative “side hustle”.

Further stated in the Memo were the variety of health risks to be attracted as a result of a continuous indulgement in this act. Some short term effects highlighted included; Abdominal Pain, Breast Tenderness, Bloating, Mood Swings, Ovarian Hyper stimulation Syndrome (OHSS), Infection and Bleeding, Potential injury to the Bladder, nearby blood vessels and Bowels and Psychological distress while a long term effect highlighted was loss of fertility.

The management also emphasized on the inconclusiveness of current research on “ who is medically safe to donate” and “ how many times can donation safely occur”.

However, based on expert recommendation, the ideal interval between donation is, “ Donation shouldn't take place more than three times in a year”, “A reputable clinic that adheres to established guidelines and prioritizes donor's safety should always be chosen”.

The UHS management declared that although current evidence doesn't decisively link egg donation to increased risk of cancer, nevertheless, the lack of extensive long term studies means that potential risks cannot be entirely ruled out.

Therefore, students are advised to seek professional medical advice before considering egg donation and should make informed choices regarding health related matters, always prioritizing their health.
