UI Inter-Faculty Relay: Economics and BAMSSA Take Top Spots, FATSSSA Clinches Third

The University of Ibadan Track and Field team organized an Inter-faculty Relay competition among the 13 faculties in the University on the 8th of August, 2024 at Awo Stadium, University of Ibadan. According to the sports team broadcast, the competition was organized to recognize the fastest athletes in Ibadan.
The event which was supposed to start by 3 pm did not start until 4:50 pm. Before the commencement of the competition, the athletes had ample time to warm up, stretch and jog around the track in multiple groups.
The competition was supposed to be contested by male and female athletes across the 13 faculties in the University. However, some faculties didn’t have either male or female team representation. The teams from the faculties who were in attendance proceeded to register their athletes into the tournament.
Each faculty had at least 4 athletes representing their faculty. The faculty of Arts, Nursing, and Clinical Sciences had no male athletes to represent them in the tournament, while the Faculty of Nursing, Clinical Sciences, Vet Medicine, Basic Medical Science(BAMSSA) and Social Sciences (FATSSSA) were without female representation.
While speaking with Coach Ajijola, the Track and field team instructor of the University, she revealed that the competition would evolve into a Southwest tournament in which the winning team in the coming week would compete with other tertiary institutions within the southwestern region of the country. According to her, the tournament would become an annual event.
While explaining the modalities of the tournament, Coach Ajijola, explained that the relay specification employed on Thursday, 8th of August was 4x100 for both male and female athletes while the specifications for the next round which would be held next week will be 4x400 mixed ( 2 male and 2 female). The last round which would be held in two weeks , 22nd of August, would be 4 x400 for both male and female athletes.
She also expatiated on the grouping among the contending faculties, stating that the male and female teams from the Faculties of Tech, Arts and Economics respectively will compete first in the first round of the tournament. To be followed by the Faculty of Education, Vet Medicine, Medicine, and Law. Then, the Faculty of Agric, Nursing, Clinical Science. Then,, Science, Basic Medical Science, Social Sciences and RNR.
In the first group, Economics took the lead in the female category, while Tech emerged victorious in the male category. In the second group, Education claimed the top spot in the female category, and Vet Medicine took the lead in the male category. The third and fourth groups were merged and Basic Medical Science emerged victorious in the male team.
After the preliminary rounds,, the top faculties with the highest points faced off in a showdown to determine the top 5 contenders for the Southwest games.
In the female category, the Faculty of Economics, Education, RNR, Arts, Technology, Law, and Agriculture competed to determine the top 5 contenders to represent the University in the Southwest tournament.
In the male category, the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences Tech, Agric, Social Sciences, and Education will compete to decide the top 5 contenders who would be participating in the Southwest tournament.
After computing total points, the top 5 Faculties are:
Male team;
1st- BAMSSA
2nd- Tech.
3rd- Social Sciences
4th- Economics
5th- Agric.
Female team;
1st- Economics
2nd- RNR
3rd- Agric.
4th- Education
5th- Arts
These 5 male and female faculty teams would be competing in the Southwest games. In addition, the first three teams each would receive medals for their performance in the day’s competition.
The tournament was undeterred by the downpour that soaked the tracks during the competition. Athletes demonstrated their dedication, racing through the rain. However, the slippery conditions took a toll, as two athletes suffered falls during the competition.
The event drew a sizeable crowd, with over 100 spectators cheering on their respective Faculties.
In a further Interview with the U.I Track and Field team coach, Coach Ajijola, she said “We want to see how we can develop track and field again, like the time we used to have UITES in the Olympics and National Championships. We are trying to discover new talents”.
