FATSSSA HOLDS A CONFERENCE TO COMMENCE ITS WEEK

The Faculty of The Social Sciences held a conference yesterday on Monday, November 3, 2025. This conference was the first of its programs featured for the week. The conference began with opening prayers offered by representatives from the audience, followed by the National Anthem and the University's anthems. A welcome address was given by the President of the Faculty, Mr Boluwatife Animashaun, encouraging students to participate actively in the event. Afterwards, the Vice President of the Faculty, Precious Olajide was called upon for the opening remarks of the program. 


The conference featured keynote speeches rendered by these speakers; Professor Janice Olawoye and Mrs Toroti Okogun. The speakers emphasized the significance of education which aids the development of strong creative skills. They encouraged students to harness their potential, get practical about solving societal needs and create an enabling environment for this purpose. Students during the course of the speeches were made to understand the difference between unemployment and being unemployable which necessitates them to be intentional about creative thinking and possibilities. 


A panel session was featured in the conference as well where distinguished personalities such as Miss Damilola Ogunlana, Dr Lawrence Olajide-Taiwo and Professor Remi Aiyede were hosted to speak on the theme of the conference: Reimagining Possibilities - The Social Science Student In The Evolving World. Each of the personalities contributed greatly to the discussion. It was highlighted that every social science student ought to have an ace, which is their creativity niche, and that they need to learn basic tools of communication. Students were made to understand that in social science disciplines, there isn't really a wide gap between theory and practice. 


Dr Lawrence Olajide-Taiwo gave pertinence to the acronym ‘LACCEON’ meaning; look inward, align rightly, avoid confusion, choose rightly, expect results, outcome matters, take note of changes to be able to adapt well. The system of feedback was identified by Miss Damilola Ogunlana to be a very vital tool which should be appreciated as well as the ability of individuals to understand the culture of their work. Prof Remi Aiyede was specific about students attaining 21st century skills, stating that the best form of technologies are products of disciplines which are usually painstaking, rigorous, systematic and meticulous. 


Every speaker at the event was recognized for their invaluable contribution at the conference and they were presented with plaques by the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Benjamin Ehigie to show appreciation for their presence. The conference continued with entertaining performances and was brought to an end after the closing remarks.
