On November 2, 2023, the office of the Vice President hosted a virtual workshop focused on the art of crafting scholarship-winning essays. The event, which took place via Zoom, commenced at 6:30 p.m. and drew the participation of eighty-eight (88) eager attendees.

The workshop featured two distinguished speakers: Michael Akinkunmi, a Mastercard Foundation scholar at the University of Cambridge, who earned his B.Sc. in Political Science from the University of Ibadan (UI), and Muhammed Alakitan, a PhD student in Sociology at the University of Cambridge, with a background in Sociology from UI.

During the event, Mr. Muhammed Alakitan underscored the significance of a strong Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) as a key factor in bolstering a student's chances of securing scholarships. However, he also emphasised the importance of building a well-rounded profile, achieved through engaging in internships, extracurricular activities, and community service. These endeavours can help scholarship applicants stand out amidst a sea of high-achieving candidates.

Networking and mentorship were pivotal components to ease one's academic journey. Mr. Alakitan concluded his presentation by sharing insights on how to effectively manage scholarship funds, create budgets, and optimise scholarship opportunities.

The second speaker, Mr. Michael Akinkunmi, advised participants to cultivate their leadership skills and actively seek leadership roles during their undergraduate years to enhance their attractiveness as scholarship applicants. He stressed the significance of crafting essays that convey a profound sense of purpose and passion and listing achievements.

To close his address, Mr. Akinkunmi encouraged applicants to share stories of resilience and overcoming obstacles, such as financial constraints or limited resources, when applying for scholarships. He also guided leveraging technology and online platforms to research scholarships, connect with scholarship providers, and streamline the application process. Notably, he highlighted the importance of aligning hypothetical essay topics with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In summary, the workshop left a profound impact on the attendees, imparting valuable insights on how winning scholarships can open doors to various opportunities, including internships, study abroad programs, graduate school funding, and career advancement.
