WINNING SCHOLARSHIP
By Doja.
To empower undergraduate students
with the knowledge and tools needed to excel academically and secure
scholarships, the Faculty of the Society Sciences Students Association EDC at
the University of Ibadan organized a remarkable two-part program titled "Winning
Scholarships: Positioning Yourself for Opportunities as an Undergraduate
Student." The program featured the valuable insights and experiences of
two distinguished alums pursuing their postgraduate studies at the prestigious
University of Cambridge in England.
Mr. Muhammed Alakitan and Mr.
Michael Akinkunmi, alums of the University of Ibadan (UI), took center stage as
they shared their journeys from UI to the hallowed halls of Cambridge. They
emphasized that while their stories are unique, the lessons they've learned can
benefit aspiring scholars.
Mr. Michael Akinkunmi initiated the
discussion, highlighting the significance of seeking guidance from accomplished
individuals who have already walked the path one aspires to tread. He stressed
the importance of connecting with mentors and identifying scholarship
opportunities that align with one's goals. He also mentioned that being a
first-class student is not always a strict requirement for scholarships, as
some institutions consider candidates who may not have achieved top grades for
specific courses. He urged students to embrace financial constraints and invest
in application fees, as it can reduce competition. Additionally, he explained
how some universities offer exclusive opportunities, covering application fees
for select students. However, he warned that such options may increase
competition among applicants.
Mr. Akinkunmi provided valuable tips
for crafting application essays, advising students to select a relevant
problem, propose a solution, and articulate how their chosen course would help
them address it. He encouraged students to make the most of online resources,
such as YouTube and LinkedIn, to learn about their preferred courses and stay
updated on scholarship opportunities.
Following Mr. Akinkunmi's insightful
talk, Mr. Muhammed Alakitan emphasized the importance of networking and seizing
opportunities. He shared his experience of reaching out to senior students and
professors, engaging in research projects, and gaining valuable hands-on experience.
He suggested that undergraduate students use the National Youth Service Corps
(NYSC) period to assess their future career goals and take steps toward
achieving them.
During the Q&A session, Mr.
Alakitan addressed the misconception that postgraduate degrees must align with
one's undergraduate field. He cited various examples to illustrate that this is
not the case, emphasizing that publication is not a mandatory requirement.
Both speakers concluded that while
their advice is grounded in their personal experiences, it should not be seen
as a one-size-fits-all solution. Each student's journey is unique, and what
works for one may not work for another.
The program attracted between 55 and
60 attendees from various departments within the University of Ibadan. A
dedicated WhatsApp group was established to accommodate those interested in the
program, which was conducted via Zoom on the 2nd and 3rd of November, 2023. The
focus of the program was on scouting for and securing scholarship
opportunities.
The physical program scheduled for
the 3rd of November is expected to feature distinguished speakers, including
Iyiola Abosede, Ayo Elesho, Clement Elang, and Dr. Deborah Ayodele-Olajire, who
will share their insights on academic and scholarship achievements.
The Faculty of the Society Sciences
Students Association EDC at the University of Ibadan continues to play a
crucial role in supporting and empowering students in their academic pursuits.
The knowledge shared by Mr. Alakitan and Mr. Akinkunmi will surely leave a
lasting impact on aspiring scholars and future leaders.
