By Eniola Fase
The FATSSSA (Faculty of the Social Sciences Students' Association) Orientation Programme for the academic year 2022/2023 was held today at the Large Lecture Theatre. The primary objective of this event was to warmly welcome and acquaint new students with the Faculty of the Social Sciences at the prestigious University of Ibadan. Commencing with the rendition of the National and University Anthems, the program set a patriotic and academic tone.
Miss Nwaka Esther, acting as the Mistress of Ceremony, skillfully introduced the distinguished guests who graced the orientation. Her introduction established a formal and inclusive atmosphere, making everyone feel welcome and appreciated.
Professor Nwochocha, the esteemed Dean of the Faculty of the Social Sciences, took the podium to elucidate the faculty's vision and mission. He passionately emphasized the institution's unwavering commitment to academic excellence and active engagement with the community, outlining these as the fundamental values that guide the faculty's actions and aspirations.
Following this, Mr. Olumide Dasaolu, the President of FATSSSA, extended a heartfelt welcome to the incoming students. In his address, he reassured them of a fulfilling academic journey ahead and the unwavering support of the student community.
Dr. Olaniyan, serving as the Subdean, provided vital insights into the academic requirements for graduation. He meticulously explained the credit and CGPA requirements necessary for successful completion of their academic journey. Dr. Olaniyan stressed the paramount importance of academic diligence and unwavering focus, underlining the significance of maintaining academic standards.
In a captivating presentation, Dr. Lanfewa emphasized the delicate balance between academics and extracurricular activities. He provided strategies for achieving this balance, with a resounding emphasis on self-awareness as the key to managing academic and personal pursuits effectively.
Mr. Olalekan, the Faculty Librarian, took the stage to illuminate the abundant resources available in the university library. His presentation highlighted the invaluable role of the library in supporting students' academic endeavors, encouraging them to take full advantage of these facilities for their growth and success.
During the segment dedicated to Dental wellness, led by Mr. Fiyin Atinmo, Chairman of the Council of Faculty Presidents, students were educated on the importance of maintaining good dental health throughout their academic journey. This health-focused session provided essential information to ensure students' well-being during their time at the university.
However, as the Speaker of the FATSSSA House of Representatives (FHR) proceeded to orient the freshers on the inner workings of FATSSSA, it became increasingly apparent that a significant number of freshmen began to leave the program prematurely. This exodus resulted in numerous vacant seats within the spacious auditorium, casting a shadow over the otherwise enthusiastic gathering.
Regrettably, despite the noticeable departure of students, it became evident that the organizing committee remained passive and did not take immediate action to address this unfolding issue during the event. The absence of any efforts to re-engage or redirect these departing students left a significant gap in ensuring that all students, both those who remained and those who exited, felt actively involved and informed within the FATSSSA community. This lack of action impacted the overall atmosphere of the orientation, causing a dip in the sense of unity and enthusiasm that such events aim to cultivate.
