On
April 27th, 2023, the Faculty of The Social Sciences Students Association
(FATSSSA) at the University of Ibadan hosted its inaugural "Dean for a
Day" challenge. The event took place at the Small Lecture Theatre (SLT) of
the faculty, and it was a resounding success.
The
program commenced at 4:18 pm, with the Faculty President, Kingsley Chukwuma,
delivering a welcome speech and then handing it over to the judges to introduce
themselves. The judges included the L&D President and her Deputy, the
Deputy Editor in Chief, and an Editorial member of the FATSSSA Press
Organization.
After
the judges' introduction, the faculty president called upon the nominees for
the challenge. The first nominee was Mr. Mayowa Adejumo, a 300-level student of
the Department of Political Science, followed by Mr. Kayode Ijimakinwa, a
400-level student of the Department of Geography.
The
challenge's theme was "If I were the Dean: How I would lead better,"
and it began with Mr. Mayowa outlining his plans for three key areas: Development,
Research, and Training. Regarding Research, he emphasized the need for grants
for faculty lecturers, the establishment of a faculty-owned media or journal,
and various necessary training programs for faculty lecturers. He also proposed
the recruitment of external lecturers, joint research facilities for lecturers,
a predominant Student-Lecturer Development Program (SLDP), and student grants
and internship opportunities.
Following
the first speaker, Mr. Kayode took the microphone to discuss his plans if he
were the Dean for a day. He started by addressing inefficient lecturers'
teaching styles, a strict examination marking guide, students' ability to earn
extra credits, and the level of fitness required for examination. He also
proposed a high prestige for IT programs within the faculty, IT programs for
all departments in the faculty, and the acceptance of well-kept hairstyles,
especially for male students.
After
both speakers finished, the audience gave their opinions on their speeches, and
the President of the L&D club announced the scores awarded to each speaker.
The first speaker had an aggregate score of 58.9%, while the second speaker had
an aggregate score of 71.5%.
The
event concluded at 5:00 pm, with the appointed "Dean for a day" being
welcomed and applauded. The President of the faculty delivered a vote of
thanks, expressing gratitude to all those who made the event a success.
