FATSSSA leadership observes maiden leadership retreat

The leadership of the Faculty of the Social Sciences Students’ Association (FATSSSA) during the weekend observed a leadership retreat at the Post Graduate Seminar Room of the Faculty of the Social Sciences. The retreat which was the first of its kind in the faculty was organized in a bid to equip the leadership of the association with requisite knowledge for service, as well as to foster the synergy between all organs and offices within the association.


While speaking during their different sessions, the speakers: Mr. Emmanuel Adeyemo (D’Facilitator), former President of FATSSSA in the 2015/2016 session; Mr. Raphael Stephen (Daddy Fame), Executive Director of the Fame Initiative; and Dr. Idowu Johnson all encouraged the student leaders to use their various offices to advance the course of humanity, to leverage on relationship and also ensure that they do not allow their extracurricular activities affect their primary assignment in the university.

In a separate session, Mr. Emmanuel Adeyemo who spoke on ‘Putting the Pieces Together’ noted the need to work together for active collaboration while also maintaining the requisite checks and balances needed to foster the collective interest of students. He also asked the students to work on their mind set. “Your job as executive members or as faculty of representative member is that you need to have the mindset of what positive thing you will do for the students going out of this university or coming in into this university”, he said.


Dr. Idowu Johnson while giving his remark told the students to work within the ambit of the department, faculty and university rules and regulations, promote peace and advance knowledge. He also pointed out the need for the leadership of the association to work in the interest of their students by approaching the members of staff and the management of the faculty in achieving their goals. In his words, “you must try to come out openly and discuss issues either affecting your departments, your members, anything, meet the dean, meet your lecturers…”

During his own session, Mr. Raphael Stephen encouraged the leadership of the association to value human relationship and to also leverage on it. He maintained that leaders need to build themselves not only in academics but in other spheres of their lives.
Student leaders present at the retreat include: members of the FATSSSA executive council, Principal officers and honourable members of the FHR, Presidents of departments in the faculty, the President of the Literary and Debating Society and the Editor-in-chief of the FATSSSA Press Organisation.

THE FATSSSA WEEK EVENTS THROUGH THE EYES OF A NERDY FATSSSAITE

However, there had been loud hiccups with the crispy picnic, so many might have been hesitant to show up at the FATSSSA Week events. In preparation for the opening day of the events, the Large Lecture Theatre had been decorated. A large purple banner bearing the name of the faculty, with beautiful splashes of white and orange, was glued to the wall. The week started with an incredible intellectual programme - ‘Dean For  A Day’ and ‘FATSSSAites who inspire us’. I was determined to attend the programme as it was a new trend and I was curious to see how it would turn out. My mouth went agape as I saw FATSSSAites rush to the event.
