WHISTLE BLOWING POLICY; A MOCKERY OF THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION?

By Lucky Racer

In recent times, we have heard the songs of change sang by our leaders but we have been made to dance to the tunes of pain. While we keep hearing the sounds of change, the change our hearts desire has continued to elude us. While we strive to fight our greatest enemy, our leaders only make a mockery of the fight. As we continue to device one of the world's best practices in our fight against the menace that has eaten deep into our sub consciousness, our leaders have continued to show us that we cannot catchup with world's best practices.

According to the Vanguard of 21st December, 2016; the minister of finance Mrs. Kemi Adeosun made known that the whistle blowing policy was aimed at consolidating the ongoing anti-corruption campaign embarked upon by the present administration, and that a bill will soon be passed to that effect.

No doubt the whistle blowing policy is certainly a right step in the right direction as in recent times we have withnessed positive outcomes. Vanguard reported that since inception, at least #73billion have be recovered. This therefore signals progress in the fight against corruption.  However, while these funds are being recovered, it is important to not be carried away with the reports we get, but to seek a logical end.

While the land is raged with poverty, unemployment and non-payment of salaries among other things, funds 'without owners' are being discovered lying fallow. Meanwhile, no claim has been made on any of these funds and consequently, no convictions have been made. And more saddening is that in recent times the agencies of government at the forefront of this fight have lost a number of high profile cases in court. And so we are caught in the web of hopelessness.

According to an online platform; naij.com, the federal government through its agencies have lost four corruption cases in 96hours under the present administration. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) lost two while the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) lost one each. If the loss of corruption cases are ones to go by; it therefore signify that getting culprits who are whistle blown convicted will only be delusional.

In the words of the 44th president of the United States; Barack Obama, "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek". Hence, if change actually begins at the individual level, then it is high time our leaders acted this out at every level. And if one of the ends of whistle blowing policy is to curb corruption, then corruption cases should be fought to a logical end. Recovered funds should therefore be used for projects that will benefit the lot of the common man.
