ON DIANA AWARD: FATSSSAite wins International Award for Social Impact

by Emmanuel Akinwale

Ayotomiwa Elesho, a final-year student in the Political Science Department, has been recognised as a Diana Award winner for 2024.

The Diana Award officially unveiled its 2024 Roll of Honour 18 hours ago via a LinkedIn post that states:  “The late Diana, Princess of Wales believed that young people have the power to change the world. Our 2024 Roll of Honour features the next generation of Diana Award Recipients who are proving Princess Diana right by being the change they want to see in the world”.

The Diana Award is the only charity established in memory of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, honouring her belief that young people possess the power to change the world. Its mission focuses on empowering young individuals to lead that change through various initiatives designed to unlock their potential, inspire action, and create opportunities, ensuring that no young person is excluded or left behind.

Ayotomiwa Elesho was recognised for his desire to tackle Nigeria’s homelessness crisis, through his organisation, HNH Nigeria.

Reflecting on his win, Ayo-Elesho remarked: “When I founded Homeless Not Hopeless Nigeria in May 2020, I just wanted to contribute my quota towards solving the challenge of homelessness. I decided to

herald the change I wished to see in the way people saw the problem, and treated the homeless in Nigeria.

Since then, I have gotten genuine support from various quarters which have all culminated in the progress we 've so far made at HNHNigeria.”.

Stating further how he felt, he remarked: "I feel honoured to be recognized as a Diana Award recipient. Diana, Princess of Wales, dedicated a significant part of her life to creating a positive impact across the globe, and to be recognized in her memory makes me feel honoured."

Asked what it meant to him as a social entreprenur, Ayotomiwa Elesho replied: "Receiving the Diana Award is a testament to my dedication to be the change I wish to see in my society. But beyond that, it is an avenue to create further awareness of an issue that I'm very passionate about - homelessness. I believe that winning the Diana Award has begun to shine more light on this relatively under-tackled issue. My goal is to create awareness of homelessness and I'm glad that the Diana Award, being a global award with a global audience, is helping me do this on a global stage. Also, while it is good to create change, it is even better to influence other people to become changemakers. With my Diana Award recognition, I'm sure that many more people who have spotted problems in their societies and are hoping to create change are now inspired to start their social impact journey. My team members and volunteers who supported me in my awareness-creation journey are appreciated because this award would have been impossible without them. My Diana Award is dedicated to every homeless person out there. You are not alone in your plight and I believe that a lasting solution to the homelessness crisis is underway."
