FATSSSA House of Representatives Inaugurates New Members Amidst Election Challenges
By Glorious Olajire
The Faculty of The Social Sciences Students’ Association House of Representatives (FHR) convened its 2nd legislative sitting on November 22, 2023, at the Small Lecture Theatre within the Faculty of The Social Sciences, University of Ibadan. The meeting witnessed the inauguration of eight honourable members, a pivotal moment in the association's governance.
Following the FATSSSA Constitution, Chapter Six (6), Article 15, section (i) and sub-section (i), the constitution mandates the presence of two elected representatives from each department to represent each academic level - 100, 200, and 300 levels.
Earlier, on September 21, 2023, a fresh group of honourable members was elected to office following an election organized by the Independent FATSSSA Electoral Commission. However, a few challenges arose during this election process, leading to the cancellation of elections for the Sociology 300 level. Consequently, vacancies remain in key departments, including Political Science 100 level and 400 level, as well as Geography 200 level.
The recently inaugurated honourable members for 100 level include Honourable Success Emmanuel from the Department of Sociology and Ojo Mitchel Abisola from the Department of Psychology. For 200 level, Honourable Ifeanyi Jude John from the Department of Sociology and Honourable Joy Umakhihe Banks from the Department of Psychology were sworn in. Honourable Soremekun Iyiolorun Praise is representing Geography, 300 Level constituency. Meanwhile, Honourable Akana Mary Jesudara and June Omodele Monica have been entrusted with representing the 400 Level Department of Sociology constituency. Lastly, Hon. Osasu Ehigiator has assumed the role of representative for the Geography 400 level.
Miss Oladunni, the Returning Officer of IFEC, has reported that plans for a supplementary election to fill the Sociology 300 level seat are currently "in progress." Addressing the challenges faced during the elections, she stated, "A lot of recommendations were given to us by the FHR. All the elections will be held this week, so the committee and I are working towards a better election. More details will be given as we meet and come up with plans to put these recommendations in place."
As for the remaining non-inaugurated members of the house, the clerk of the house has clarified that they will be inaugurated at the upcoming sitting or through an online meeting.
The FHR remains committed to ensuring effective representation and addressing the vacancies within its ranks, as it continues to uphold the principles of student governance within the Faculty of The Social Sciences.
